RICCI NETS HAT TRICK IN, 27-4, LOSS
TO WESTERN CONNECTICUT

Providence, R.I.-Senior attacker Jessica Ricci (Hope, RI) scored three goals to lead the Rhode Island College women’s lacrosse team as they fell, 27-4, to Western Connecticut in a rain-shortened Little East Conference contest in Providence on Friday evening.

The Colonials (5-4, 2-0 LEC) opened the game by rattling off the first four goals, capped by a free position shot by freshman midfielder Lindsey Eanniello (Danbury, CT) with 25:34 left. A Ricci tally brought the Anchorwomen (0-7, 0-2 LEC) to within three, but Western responded with five straight goals to take a commanding, 9-1, lead.

Ricci tallied another goal off a feed from classmate attacker Danielle Landon (Wading River, NY) with 17:33 left, but the Colonials rattled off 11 straight goals, led by sophomore Destinee Carey (New Milford, CT) and senior Kelsey Heaton (New Milford, CT), who combined for five goals and four helpers down the stretch, to take a 20-2 lead into the break.

A rain-soaked second half saw RIC sophomore attack Betsy Heidel (Warwick, RI) open the scoring by converting a free position shot and Ricci added an unassisted tally late, but Carey and Heaton proved to be too much, scoring four more goals and adding three more assists to take the 27-4 victory in 54:36 of game time.

Freshman goaltender Alasondra Apici (Providence, RI) made 10 saves in the setback (0-7), while her counterpart, freshman Nicole Petruzzi (Thomaston, CT), made four saves in the victory.

Heaton led the way offensively, totaling 15 points on eight goals and seven assists. Carey contributed eight points with six goals and a pair of helpers. Eanniello had three goals and three assists for six points.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Worcester State on Thursday, April 9 (7 p.m.).
