WESTERN CONNECTICUT SWEEPS ANCHORWOMEN

Danbury, Conn-Western Connecticut senior third baseman Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, CT) went 4-for-4 with two doubles, one home run and one RBI to lead the Colonials to a sweep over the Rhode Island College softball team in Little East Conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

Western (14-8, 5-1 LEC) took the first game over RIC (3-13, 1-5 LEC), 5-1, while taking the victory in game two, 8-0 (five innings).

The Colonials opened the first game with a bang, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Wojtkiewicz led off the inning with a solo blast to put Western up one.  With runners on second and third and no one out, senior first baseman Julia Bocek (Southington, CT) smacked an RBI ball into deep left that eventually scored two runs. A double two batters later drove in Bocek to put Western up, 4-0, after the first.

The Colonials scored again in the bottom of the fifth when Wojtkiewicz scored on an RBI single following her inning-opening double. The Anchorwomen got on the board in the top of the seventh when sophomore pitcher Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI) drove in sophomore left fielder Sarah Molin (Seymour, CT) who had doubled in her at-bat. Western was able to close out the inning however, taking the 5-1 game one victory.

Duvall suffered the loss (1-4) for the Anchorwomen, allowing five runs on eight hits, all of them earned, while striking out three.  Junior pitcher Alle Sabith (Meriden, CT) picked up the victory (7-5), going seven innings, allowing just one earned run on two hits, while recording seven K’s.

Game two saw Western score in every inning but the second to take the 8-0 (five inning) victory over the Anchorwomen. Wojtkiwwicz was driven in during the home half of the first to put Western up, 1-0, after one.

Following a scoreless second for both teams, the Colonials struck in the third when junior catcher Erin Weber (Rocky Hill, CT) drove in Wojtkiewicz with only one out. A RIC error allowed Weber to score before a runner caught stealing allowed the Anchorwomen to escape the inning down 3-0.

A solo homer in the fourth made the score 4-0 for the hosts, before a huge fifth inning ended the game early. Wojtkiewicz reached base after being hit by a pitch. A single put runners on first and second before freshman pinch hitter Kayla Nowak (North Branford, CT) ripped a triple to right field which scored two.

Nowak scored on a fielder’s choice with freshman second baseman Samantha Anthony (Ellington, CT) reaching first. A single advanced Anthony to second and she advanced to third on a caught foul ball. With runners on the corners, Anthony ended the game; crossing home following a wild pitch.

Junior Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) picked up the loss (0-7) for the Anchorwomen, going 4.1 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits, seven of those earned with two strikeouts. Junior Emily Cintorino (Bristol, CT) went five innings in the victory (6-2), allowing zero runs on two hits while striking out three.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Worcester State on Wednesday, April 15 (5 p.m.).
