FOLEY LEADS ANCHORMEN PAST COLONIALS

Danbury, Conn.-Rhode Island College junior catcher Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA) went 5-for-8 with one home run, one triple and three RBI as the baseball team swept Western Connecticut State in Little East action on Saturday afternoon.

 

Rhode Island College (20-9, 8-4 LEC) took game one, 16-1 (seven innings), before earning the sweep of the Colonials (14-14, 5-7 LEC) with a 7-4 victory in game two.

 

Game one saw the Anchormen jump on the board quickly when senior right fielder Pat Rogers (Waterford, CT) blasted a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to put RIC up 3-0. After a scoreless second, the Anchormen struck for two more runs in the third on an RBI triple by Foley, which was followed immediately by a RBI groundout by Rogers.

 

Western got one back in the home half of the frame when sophomore shortstop EJ Lavoie (East Granby, CT) smacked an RBI double to left field. RIC answered back in the top of the fourth however, when Foley blasted a two-run homer to put the Maroon and Gold up, 7-1.

The Anchormen struck for two more runs in the top of the sixth with Rogers and senior third baseman Tyler Santaniello (Cumberland, RI) each recorded RBI hits in the inning. The top of the seventh is where RIC did the majority of their damage, crossing the plate seven times in the inning. The inning was fueled by a two-run home run from freshman first baseman Frank Pettinato (Cranston, RI), which was the third homer of the game for the Anchormen.

 

RIC senior righty Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI) was able to close the door in the bottom of the seventh, inducing two ground outs and a fly out in a 1-2-3 inning. Cummiskey went the distance, facing 26 batters in 7.0 innings, allowing just one earned run and six hits, while fanning seven in the victory (5-1).

 

Western junior right-hander Craig Frobel (Southington, CT) went 6.0 innings in the loss (2-3). He allowed nine runs on nine hits, while striking out three batters.

 

Foley went 4-for-4 with four runs scored, three RBI, one homer and a triple in the victory. Lavoie went 1-for-2 for Western, recording a double and one RBI.

 

Game two was a tight, defensive battle, with the game knotted at one after three innings. The Colonials were able to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI by sophomore second baseman Joe Costa (Hopewell Jct. NY) and junior center fielder John Kelly (Stratford, CT).

 

Following a scoreless fifth, RIC was able to regain the lead in the top of the sixth inning with Rogers, Santaniello and junior designated hitter Angelo St. Laurent (Cranston, RI) all recording RBI in the inning. Western sophomore catcher Bryan Harper (Ledyard, CT) was able to cut the RIC lead to one, 5-4, with an RBI double to center in the bottom of the eighth.

 

RIC tacked on a pair on insurance runs in the top of the ninth before RIC sophomore righty Jake Roy (Seekonk, MA) shut the door on a comeback with a scoreless ninth.

 

RIC junior lefty Dylan Pingitore (Johnston, RI) (3-1) went 7.1 innings allowing four runs, on six hits before giving way to Roy for the remaining 1.2 innings where he allowed just two hits, to pick up the save (1).

 

Western junior right hander Todd Lyons (Norwalk, CT) went 8.2 innings, allowing seven runs, just two of them earned, on eight hits, while striking out seven in the defeat (3-2).

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to MIT on Wednesday, April 29.
