JOHNSON & WALES DOWNS RIC, 77-65

Providence, R.I.-Freshman guard Roosevelt Shider (Meriden, CT) scored 20 points on  6-for-7 shooting from three-point range, but the Rhode Island College men’s basketball team fell to cross-city rival Johnson & Wales, 77-65, in a non-conference battle at The Wildcat Center on Tuesday night.

 

The Wildcats (6-2) started the game on a quick 4-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws by junior guard Quarry Greenaway (Westchester, NY) with 17:53 remaining in first half.

 

Rhode Island College (6-3) closed the gap and the two teams battled back and forth with JWU holding the 12-11 lead with 11:19 remaining. Senior guard Eric Alleyne (Watertown, MA) buried a floater in the lane to cap a 7-0 Anchormen run to put the visitors up 18-12. RIC would increase its lead to eight, 33-25, with 4:41 left when Shider nailed a three-pointer from 24 feet out. JWU battled back and a deep ball from Wildcat junior guard Tom Garrick (Seekonk, MA) with 1:16 remaining in the stanza made the score 39-38 RIC, which is where it would stay entering the half.

 

The Anchormen shot 48.1 percent (13-for-27) from the field in the first half, while the Wildcats shot 42.3 percent (11-for-26). Greenaway and Garrick led the Wildcats with 13 points and 11 points, respectively, while Shider notched 12 points for the Anchormen.

The visitors held on to the small lead early in the second half, but the tide began to turn when JWU freshman center Michael Kiser (Pike Road, AL) threw down a thunderous dunk with 17:55 to go to cut the RIC lead to just two, 42-40. A jump shot by Greenaway with 15:28 gave the Wildcats the lead, 52-51. JWU increased its lead to seven, 60-53, on a long ball by Garrick with 11:40 left in the half and the hosts wouldn’t look back as they outscored the Anchormen down the stretch, 17-12, to cruise to the 77-65 victory.

 

The Anchormen were led by Shider’s 20 points, two rebounds and two assists. Senior forward Chris Burton (New Rochelle, NY) tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards. RIC shot 39.0 percent (23-for-59) from the field, while shooting a sizzling 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from long range. RIC struggled from the charity stripe shooting just 40.0 percent (10-for-25).

 

Garrick and freshman guard Jarell Lawson (Providence, RI) scored 20 for JWU. Greenaway chipped in 15 points and five assists. For the game, JWU shot 43.4 percent (23-for-53) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-for-17) from three-point range and 89.3 percent (25-for-28) from the free throw line.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host MIT on Thursday, Dec. 11 (7 p.m.).
