BURTON & ALLEYNE HELP RIC DOWN LASELL, 75-57

Providence, R.I.-Senior forward Chris Burton (New Rochelle, NY) nearly tallied a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds, while classmate guard Eric Alleyne (Watertown, MA) chipped in 17 points and two steals, as the Rhode Island College menís basketball team earned a 75-57 non-conference victory over Lasell on Thursday night.

 

The two teams traded baskets early with neither team taking a lead larger than two points. Lasell (0-2) took a 14-8 advantage on a three-ball by junior guard Richard OíBrien (Manchester, NH). The Anchormen (2-1) used a 10-0 run to take the 18-14 lead until another three-pointer, this time by freshman guard Scott Arsenault (Walpole, MA) cut the RIC lead to one, 18-17, with 7:08 left in the half. The teams traded buckets down the stretch with the Anchormen taking a five-point advantage, 40-35, into the locker room.

 

RIC shot 48.4 percent (15-for-31) from the field in the half, while shooting an astounding 44.4 percent (4-for-9) from three-point land and 75 percent (6-for-8) from the free throw line.

Lasell shot 46.4 percent (13-for-28) from the field and 80 percent (4-for-5) from the free throw line, while shooting 38.5 percent (5-for-13) from three.

 

The Anchormen used an early run in the second half to take a double digit lead until a layup by junior forward Pat Marchand (Cranston, RI) brought the Lasers to within nine, 48-39 with 16:20 remaining.

 

The Anchormen began to pull away in the final 10 minutes of the game and a steal and dunk by Burton put the game away for good by giving RIC the 19-point lead, 73-54. Lasell junior guard Pedro Pabon (Queens, NY) tallied a late three, but two free throws by Alleyne gave the game its final margin, 75-57.

 

The Lasers were led by Marchandís 20 points and 14 rebounds with Pabon chipping in 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. The Lasers shot 37 percent (20-for-54) from the field, 31.8 percent (7-for-22) from behind the three-point arc and 58.8 percent (10-for-17) from the free throw line.

 

RIC was paced by Burtonís 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting, nine rebounds and three steals. Alleyne scored 17 points, handed out a team-high five assists and two steals.  The Anchormen shot 47.4 percent (27-for-57) from the field and a sizzling 41.2 percent (7-for-17) from three-point land for the game. They went 14-for-19 from the free throw line as a team.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Brandeis on Saturday, Nov. 22 (1 p.m.).
