ROGER WILLIAMS EDGES RIC, 24-21

Providence, R.I.-Junior 149 lbs. Shawn Giblin (Cranston, RI) picked up a pin, while sophomore 157 lbs. Michael Murphy (North Providence, RI) staked Rhode Island College to a 21-15 lead with two bouts to go, but Roger Williams stormed back to defeat the Anchormen, 24-21, in a battle of New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) rivals on Friday evening at The Murray Center.

 

The Hawks (15-1), ranked No. 1 in New England, won for the 10th straight match. The Anchormen (7-8) came into tonightís action ranked No. 6 in New England.

 

RIC sophomore Justin Caparco (Johnston, RI) opened the nightís action with a 4-2 decision over RWU sophomore Joe Albina (Milford, NH) at 174 lbs. The visitors responded with a technical fall, five-point victory as junior David Welch (Salem, NH) downed RIC sophomore John Georges (Cranston, RI), 17-2.

 

Anchorman sophomore heavyweight Terrance Jean-Jacques (Haverhill, MA) made short work of RWU freshman Jake Genereaux (Duxbury, MA), who had bumped up a weight class, by pinning him in just 57 seconds.

Roger Williams freshman 125 lbs. Nicholas Barbaria (Scarsdale, NY) tied the match up, 9-9, by earning a major, 13-2, win over RIC freshman Brennen Liebel (Feeding Hills, MA). Sophomore Matt Elias (Madison, CT) secured a forfeit victory at 133 lbs. to put the Hawks on top by six, 15-9, at the midway point.

 

The Anchormen responded by winning the next three bouts. Junior Ricondo Cole (Cranston, RI) and RWU freshman Justin Cochran (Paramus, NJ) engaged the eveningís most exciting match. In a nasty, physical battle that saw both benches rise to their respective feet, the two went to overtime tied, 1-1. Cole took advantage in the opening seconds of sudden victory to drive Cochran out of bounds with a match-winning takedown.

 

Giblin came from behind in the second period of his match, trailing, 2-1, at 4:28 before gaining a quick takedown and pin over sophomore Danny Downes (Houston, TX). Murphy racked up 13 points en route to a 13-6 win over sophomore Ty Herzog (Slatington, PA) to give the hosts a 21-15 lead with two matches remaining.

 

The top-ranked Hawks didnít back down and got a huge pin from the No. 10-ranked grappler in the country at 165 lbs. as junior Francisco Colom (Ridgefield, NJ) won at 5:52 of the match to tie it, 21-21, with one to go.

 

RWU junior 174 lbs. Dan Ressler (Hillsdale, NJ) and RIC junior Brandon Conrad (East Bridgewater, MA) went into the third period deadlocked, 5-5, but Ressler picked up an escape to open the third and a late takedown to win, 8-5, and seal the win for the visitors.
