LEMIRE PLACES SECOND IN ALL-AROUND;
COSTELLO TAKES THIRD ON VAULT AS
GYMNASTICS POSTS BEST SCORE IN 10 YEARS

Providence, R.I.-Freshmen Samantha LeMire (Moodus, CT) placed second in the all-around and classmate Victoria Costello (Housatonic, MA) third on vault as the Rhode Island College women’s gymnastics team recorded their highest score in a decade, falling to Ithaca, 187.500-179.950, on Saturday afternoon at The Murray Center.

 

The 179.950 score for the Anchorwomen was the highest mark for the program since Feb. 19, 2005 when RIC fell at MIT 182.250-181.125.

 

Today’s meet marked the final home action for RIC seniors Jamie Krywinski (Toms River, NJ) and Ashley Mertens (Wakefield, RI). The pair, along with their families, was recognized after the match.

 

 

 

LeMire placed second overall in the all-around (36.450), fifth on vault (9.375) and fourth on floor (9.175). She also finished second on the team on bars (9.050) and scored and 8.850 on beam.

 

Costello placed third on vault (9.450), scored an 8.500 on floor and an 8.450 on bars. Junior Emma Hartan (Hebron, CT) placed fourth on both vault (9.400) and beam (9.350), while also competing on floor (9.150).

 

Freshman all-arounder Kendra Balcerak (Lima, NY) posted the high score of the day, a 9.675 on beam to lead the Bombers. She also posted the top bars score (9.625), while also placing third on floor (9.450). Junior Megan Harrington (Fayetteville, NY) took the top spot in the all-around with a 37.525. She also had the top floor score (9.525), took second on beam (9.475), was fifth on bars (9.150) and tied for fifth on vault (9.375). The 187.500 was the highest score of the season for Ithaca.

 

Junior Cherise Lee (Burlington, NJ) placed fourth on floor (9.175) for the Anchorwomen.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will compete at a quad-meet hosted by Brockport on Sunday, March 1 (noon).
