JONATHAN MURRAY EARNS
ALL-AMERICAN HONORS AT ASICS UNIVERSITY NATIONALS

Akron, Ohio-Senior Jonathan Murray (Brentwood, NY) earned All-American honors with a seventh place finish at 59kg at the 2015 Asics University Wrestling Nationals this past weekend.

Murray, the only Division III competitor at 59 kg, earned his All-American status by going 2-1 at the tournament to finish seventh. Following an opening round loss, Murray rebounded by eliminating the weight classes’ top seed, Tiso Lara, 8-5. In the seventh/eighth place match, Murray topped Bill Prochniewski by technical fall, 17-8, to claim seventh and garner All-American accolades.

“This has honestly been a dream of mine since I was little,” Murray said. “This past season, I faced many medical issues which left me in tears at the Northeast Regional at Roger Williams University. After my final match of the national qualifier, I told my coaches that I needed redemption and will train to compete in the University Nationals and three months later I was able to garner All-American status. I will be training this summer at the United States Olympic Training Center in Northern Michigan in late June.”

While at Rhode Island College, Murray was a First Team New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) All-Star and an NCAA Div. III National Championship qualifier as a junior in 2013-2014. He was a two-time National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American for the Anchormen.
