2014-15 Rhode Island College Wrestling
Season Summary

(10-8 Overall; 9-5 in the New England Wrestling Association)
10th Place at the 2015 NCAA Regional Championships
22nd Place at the 2015 NCAA National Championships

Providence, R.I.-Head Coach Jay Jones’ (Career Record 209-146-1; .588) Anchormen finished the 2014-15 season with a 10-8 overall record and a 9-5 mark against New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) opponents.

 

Rhode Island College sent one wrestler to the 2015 NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships and finished 22nd (55 teams) with a score of 18.0.

 

Prior to that, the Anchormen placed 10th (18 teams) at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships held in Bristol, R.I., with a score of 55.5. Four Anchormen earned All-Northeast accolades by virtue of their performances.

 

During the season, RIC finished third (seven teams) at the Will Abele Invitational on Jan. 17 and fourth (18 teams) at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 22.

 

 

 

Senior Jonathan Murray (Brentwood, NY) closed out his career with a 66-36 (.647) record to go along with 152 takedowns, 39 reversals, 84 escapes, 56 near-falls and 16 pins.

 

As a senior in 2014-15, Murray finished the season with a 3-10 record at 125 lbs. to go along with seven takedowns, 10 escapes, one near-fall and two pins. He was named Honorable Mention All-NEWA.

 

As a junior in 2013-14, Murray was named a First Team NEWA All-Star at 125 lbs. He qualified for the NCAA Div. III Wrestling National Championships on March 14-15 and went 1-2 on the weekend after earning All-NCAA Northeast Regional honors with a third place effort on March 2. Murray was also named a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) for the second consecutive season. For the season, he went 20-6 with 39 takedowns, 13 reversals, 18 escapes, 18 near-falls and four pins. Murray placed first at 125 lbs. at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

As a sophomore in 2012-13, Murray was named a 2013 Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and was also named to the Pilgrim League’s Scholar-Athlete Team. He went 19-7 at 125-133 lbs. with 55 takedowns, 10 reversals, 26 escapes, 19 near-falls and five pins on the season. Murray placed second at 125 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10 and third at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 17.

 

As a freshman in 2011-12, Murray earned All-New England honors with a third place finish and was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star while at Bridgewater State University. He went 24-13 (.649) at 125 lbs. to go along with 51 takedowns, 16 reversals, 30 escapes, 18 near-falls and five pins.

 

Murray is a youth development major with a minor in coaching and a 2008 graduate of Brentwood High School.

 

Senior Jonathan Costa (New Bedford, MA) was named an NWCA Scholar All-American and was an Honorable Mention to the  All-NEWA team at 133 lbs. He finished the season with a 12-9 record to go along with 12 takedowns, four reversals, 10 escapes and eight near-falls. He placed first in the 141 lbs. class at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 22. Costa placed fourth at 133 lbs. at the Will Abele Invitational on Jan. 17. He earned All-Northeast Regional honors by virtue of a fourth place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Feb. 28-Mar. 1. Costa was named He has one additional year of eligibility remaining due to a medical hardship waiver.

 

Junior Ricondo Cole (Cranston, RI) was named Honorable Mention All-NEWA at 141 lbs. He finished the year with an 18-5 record at 141 lbs. to go along with 38 takedowns, two reversals, nine escapes, 11 near-falls and six pins. He placed third at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 22.

 

Junior Brandon Conrad (East Bridgewater, MA) finished the season 14-12 at 174/184 lbs. to go along with 22 takedowns, 23 escapes, five near-falls and two pins.

 

Junior Shawn Giblin (Cranston, RI) was named Honorable Mention All-NEWA at 149 lbs. He finished the season with a 17-6 record at 149 lbs. to go along with 21 takedowns, six reversals, eight escapes, seven near-falls and seven pins. He earned a spot on the All-Northeast Regional squad by virtue of his fifth place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships Feb. 28-Mar. 1. Giblin won the title at 149 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 22.

 

Junior Chris Kelly (Franklin, MA) went 8-4 at 149 lbs. with 10 takedowns, three reversals, seven escapes, three near-falls and four pins.

 

Junior Damen Patisaul (Plant  City, FL) went 8-6 at 149 lbs. with 10 takedowns, two reversals, five escapes, one near-fall and four pins.

 

Junior Chris Pecora (Carmel, NY) was 5-8 at 141 lbs. to go along with two takedowns, two reversals, two near-falls and two pins.

 

Sophomore Justin Caparco (Johnston, RI) went 9-7 at 184 lbs. with 10 takedowns, four reversals, five escapes, three near-falls and two pins. He placed second at the USC Wildcat Open on Feb. 1.

 

Sophomore Samuel Comfort (Woodville, MA) was 0-1 at 125 lbs.

 

Sophomore Jake Dorman (Foxboro, MA) was 9-8 at 133/141 lbs. with six takedowns, five escapes, nine near-falls and one pin.

 

Sophomore John Georges (Cranston, RI) was 8-11 at 197 lbs. to go along with eight takedowns, five reversals, seven escapes, one near-fall and three pins. He placed second at the Will Abele Invitational on Jan. 17.

 

Sophomore Terrance Jean-Jacques (Haverhill, MA) was named the NEWA Co-Wrestler of the Year, Team MVP and an All-American for his performance on the mat. He was 34-2 at 285 lbs. with 51 takedowns, one reversal, five escapes, 10 near-falls and 18 pins. He placed second at the NCAA Div. III Wrestling National Championships to earn All-American honors. Jean-Jacques earned All-Northeast Regional honors with a second place showing at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships Feb. 28-Mar. 1. He notched first place finishes at the USC Wildcat Open on Feb. 1, the Will Abele Invitational on Jan. 17 and the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 22.

 

Sophomore Michael Murphy (North Providence, RI) earned Honorable Mention All-NEWA honors, as well as being named to the NEWA All-Rookie Team, at 157 lbs. He went 15-11 at 157 lbs. with 27 takedowns, one reversal, 18 escapes and nine near-falls. He placed second at the Will Abele Invitational on Jan. 17. Murphy garnered All-Northeast Regional accolades with a sixth place finish at the NCAA Regional Championship Championships Feb. 28-Mar. 1.

 

Sophomore Victor Zabalu (Hudson, MA) was 6-7 at 174/184 lbs. to go along with six takedowns, two reversals, 11 escapes, two near-falls and two pins. He placed sixth at 157 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 22.

 

Freshman Michael Bentley (Woburn, MA) was 6-7 at 184 lbs. to go along with three takedowns, three reversals, six escapes and one pin. He notched a fourth-place finish at the Will Abele Invitational on Jan. 17.

 

Freshman Vincent Drago (Hauppauge, NY) was 6-16 at 165 lbs. to go along with 14 takedowns, six reversals, 17 escapes, five near-falls and three pins.

 

Freshman Ryan Forestier (Providence, RI) was 2-6 at 174 lbs. with two takedowns, four escapes and one near-fall.

 

Freshman Imran Gholizadeh (Woburn, MA) was 10-8 at 197 lbs. to go along with 21 takedowns, one reversal, seven escapes, one near-fall and two pins. He placed first at the Will Abele Invitational on Jan. 17. Gholizadeh placed fourth at the USC Wildcat Open on Feb. 1.

 

Freshman Kevin Hernando (Beverly, NJ) was 4-13 at 285 lbs. with eight takedowns, three reversals, 10 escapes, two near-falls and three pins.

 

Freshman Michael Kimbrough (Providence, RI) went 1-4 at 197 lbs. with one pin on the season.

 

Freshman Matthew Libby (Bridgewater, MA) went 7-5 at 165 lbs. with three takedowns, seven reversals, seven escapes, six near-falls and two pins.

 

Freshman Brennen Liebel (Feeding Hills, MA) was 8-15 at 125 lbs. with 16 takedowns, one reversal, 11 escapes, two near-falls and three pins.
