HAWKS EDGE ANCHORMEN, 2-1, IN OVERTIME

Bristol, R.I.-Senior forward Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) scored in the opening half and freshman goalkeeper Adam Ghazal (Pawtucket, RI) recorded three saves as the Rhode Island College men's soccer team fell intra-state rival Roger Williams, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

The first half saw RWU (3-1) controlling the action, recording six shots, capped by junior midfielder Tyler Peckham (Coventry, RI), before the Anchormen (2-2) recorded one. Following a shot by freshman forward Komla Dogbey (Providence, RI) at the 16:52 mark, RIC got on the board when a pass from junior forward Jose Zarraga (Providence, RI) fed Asideu, who headed it home for his second goal of the season. The rest of the half saw back and forth action with each goalie being up to the task, keeping the score 1-0.

Roger Williams got on the board early in the second half when junior forward James Sheldon (Amherst, NH) took a cross from the opposite field and potted the ball in the right-hand side of the net. Sophomore Dan Kelly (Miller Place, NY) and senior Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, CT) recorded assists on the play. That would be all the scoring in regulation as both goalies kept the ball out of their nets.

Asiedu had the Anchormenís best chance during the extra session when he lined up a shot in the 94th minute, which was stopped by senior Tom Mangels (Garden City, NY).  Following two offside infractions on the home team, Peckham tallied the game winner on a feed from Sheldon in the 97thminute to end the game.

Mangels stopped six shots in the victory while Ghazal recorded three saves in the loss.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host WPI on Wednesday, Sept. 10 (6 p.m.).
