BURTON NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM AS ANCHORMEN FALL, 67-59, TO MARYMOUNT

Arlington, Va.-Senior forward Chris Burton (New Rochelle, NY) tallied 15 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Eric Alleyne (Watertown, MA) scored a game-high 18 points, as the Rhode Island College menís basketball team fell to host Marymount University, 67-59, in the championship game of the 2014 Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

 

RIC (1-1) and Marymount (2-0) traded baskets early until a layup by Alleyne knotted the game at 10 apiece with 12:48 remaining in the first half. A pair of free throws from freshman guard DíOndre Stockman (Upper Marlboro, MD) capped a 9-2 run for Marymount to push the lead to seven, 19-12, with 9:07 remaining. A 16-10 run to close the half pulled the Anchormen to within one, 29-28 with 20 minutes to play.

RIC shot 11-for-29 (37.9 percent) from the field in the first half, while Marymount shot 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) in the stanza.

 

An Alleyne three off a feed from Burton pushed the RIC lead to five, 36-31, with 17:15 remaining in the second half. The teams went back and forth until a layup from junior forward Patrick Matthews (Waipahu, HI) increased the RIC lead to nine, 40-31, with 14:00 minutes remaining. A jump shot by sophomore guard Terrance Tribble (White Plains, NY) made the score, 56-50, in RIC's advantage with 5:05 remaining, but a 17-3 run down the stretch by the hosts ensured the Marymount victory, 67-59.

Burton was named to the All-Tournament team. He averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks for the weekend.

 

RIC was led by Burtonís 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while Alleyne tallied 18 points, three boards, three assists and three steals.

 

Marymount was paced by Stockmanís 17 points off the bench, while senior guard Jesse Konadu (Alexandria, VA) tallied 14 points and four rebounds.

 

Rhode Island College shot 38.6 percent (22-for-57) from the field, while shooting 31.6 percent (6-for-19) from three-point land. They also shot 75 percent (9-for-12) from the charity stripe. Marymount shot 50.0 percent (21-for-42) from the field, while shooting an amazing 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from downtown. They shot a solid 73.9 percent (17-for-23) from the free throw line.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Lasell on Thursday, Nov. 20 (7 p.m.).
