TURNER & COMBS SCORE IN, 3-2, LOSS TO ELMS

Chicopee, Mass.-Rhode Island College got tallies from senior forward Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, RI) and junior midfielder Chelsea Combs (Ashford, CT) as the Anchorwomen fell, 3-2, to Elms College at Leary Field on Tuesday night in the season-opener for both clubs.

The Blazers (1-0) struck first when junior defender Kathleen Tuechler (Farmingdale, NY) heading in a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Jackie Soucia (Belchertown, MA) at the 31:17 mark of the first half.

RIC (0-1) would respond less than five minutes later when Combs found the back of the net off a feed from sophomore midfielder Brooke Morris (Lincoln, RI) at the 35:44 mark. The teams went into halftime tied at one apiece.

The Anchorwomen nearly broke the tie in the 58th minute when junior midfielder Jaclyn Greenman (Waterford, CT) ripped a shot that rattled off the post. The Blazers would finally break the deadlock when sophomore forward Brie Voight (Springfield, MA) corralled a loose ball in the box and slipped it past RIC freshman goalkeeper Katherine Haley (Hope, RI) in the 66th minute. Turner would respond just 2:08 later when her 25-yard free kick found the back of the net to tie the game, 2-2.

The tie would be short-lived, however, as Blazer senior midfielder Michelle Rossignol (Manchester, CT) found a loose ball and fed freshman midfielder Danielle Asklar (Berlin, CT) for what proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Haley (0-1) made 12 saves in her college debut, while Elms senior goalkeeper Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, NY) (1-0) stopped four in the victory. Elms held a 19-9 advantage in shots and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Worcester State on Saturday, Sept. 5 (1 p.m.).
