MONTEIRO & DOGBEY SCORE IN, 3-2, LOSS
TO ELMS AT PRESIDENTíS CUP

Mahwah, N.J.-Junior midfielder Dan Monteiro (Pawtucket, RI) and sophomore forward Komla Dogbey (Providence, RI) each tallied a goal as the Rhode Island College menís soccer team fell to Elms, 3-1, in semifinal action of the 2015 Presidentís Cup hosted by Ramapo College on Saturday afternoon.

 

With the loss, the Anchormen (0-2) will face Western New England in the consolation game (1 p.m.), while Elms (1-0) will face Ramapo (3:30 p.m.) in the championship match on Sunday afternoon.

 

The Blazers struck in 40th minute, six minutes after a RIC red card forced the Anchormen to play with 10 men for the remainder of the game. Donald Whittle scored off a feed from Connor OíGrady and the Blazers took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Anchormen struck just 3:22 into the second half when Monteiro scored unassisted off a 20-yard free kick. The next 25 minutes the game remained knotted at 1-1 until the 74th minute when Elmsí Shaquille Robinson scored off a pass from sophomore midfielder C.J. Dabkowski (Bristol, CT).

 

The Blazers upped their lead to 3-1 when Whittle scored an unassisted marker in the 85th minute. A goal in the 90th minute by Dogbey cut the deficit to just one, but the rally fell short as the Blazers escaped with the 3-2 victory.

 

RIC junior goalkeeper Chris Moura (Rumford, RI) (0-1) finished with two saves, while Elms senior Christian Kostka (Oxford, CT) and junior Nick Pennant (St. Andrew, Jamaica) (1-0) combined for five saves in the victory.
