Dudley, Mass.-The Nichols College Bison used a sweep in doubles play to propel themselves to an 8-1 victory over Rhode Island College in non-conference menís tennis action played at the Robinson Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.


Nichols (4-2) junior James Smith (Monte Sereno, CA) and freshman Igor Markowski (Paris, France) defeated the RICís (0-1) duo of junior Brett Taggart (North Kingstown, RI) and sophomore Lee Tiberi (Smithfield, RI), 8-4.


Nichols took the remaining two doubles matches in more convincing fashion, with senior Josh Halpern (Seacaucus, NJ) and junior Jake Zapatka (Wethersfield, CT) besting RICís freshmen pairing of freshman Alan Esposito (Clinton, CT) and classmate Matthew Gambardella (West Warwick, RI), 8-0, in one match, while junior Dan Roberts (South Windsor, CT) and partner Blake Norton bested the RIC pairing of junior Cory Duquette (Warwick, RI) and freshman Chandler Scott (Ashaway, RI), 8-1.

In singles, Norton topped Taggart (6-1, 6-0) and Halpern breezed past Tiberi (6-0, 6-0).  Zapatka bested Scott (6-1, 6-0) with Markowski topping Duquette (6-0, 6-1).


Nichols freshman Dawson Stento (Wellesley, MA) topped Esposito (6-1, 7-5).


Gambardella scored the lone Anchorman victory of the day, beating Giacomo Graziani (6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 11-9).


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Clark University on Wednesday, Mar. 16 (3:30 p.m.).
