RAMS SWEEP ANCHORMEN

Providence, R.I.Suffolk University freshman second baseman Jake Frasca (Darien, CT) went 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and three RBI to lead the visiting Rams to a pair of non-conference victories over Rhode Island College in baseball action played at Anchorman Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams (11-3) took game one by a score of 5-2 over the Anchormen (6-9-1), before rolling past the hosts in game two, 13-0.

Frasca led the offensive attack for the Rams with three RBI, while senior third baseman Drew Carter (Newburyport, MA) went 3-for-6 in the twinbill with three RBI of his own. RIC scattered four hits throughout the day, notching a pair in each game.

The Rams got the offense started in the second inning of game one when Frasca knocked in with a one-out double to left center field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch before being driven in by a Carter single. RIC senior pitcher Dylan Pingitore (Johnston, RI) was able to halt the damage by striking out the next two batters to end the inning.

 Junior third baseman Scott Linnane

RIC would finally break through in the bottom of the third inning, notching a pair of runs in the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Junior third baseman Scott Linnane (North Kingstown, RI) started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a ground ball. He advanced to third on a grounder to first, putting a runner on third with two out. RIC sophomore center fielder Brad Douglas (Wakefield, RI) notched an RBI single into left to drive in Linnane to knot the score at one. Following a fortuitous catcher interference call that allowed the inning to continue, RIC would pull ahead when Douglas scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.

RIC would remain in control until the top of the sixth. Following an inning-opening strikeout, Suffolk senior left fielder Rob Marks (Revere, MA) ripped a solo homer to tie the game. Suffolk senior catcher Jon Lapolla (Providence, RI) and Frasca knocked back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with two down before Carter ripped a double down the left field line to score Lapolla.

The Rams were able to tack on a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to extend their advantage to 5-2. With one out and the bases loaded, Marks was walked to make the score 4-2. Suffolk was able to secure an insurance run when junior shortstop Sean Cameron (Milford, CT) scored on a wild pitch. RIC went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to give the Rams the victory in game one of the double dip.

Suffolk junior pitcher Chuck Gibson (Malden, MA) (2-0) went the distance, striking out six, while only allowing two hits and two runs (one earned). Pingitore (1-3) went 6.1 innings, allowed 11 hits and five runs, while striking out eight in the loss.

The second game saw the Anchormen struggle in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, giving up a total of 11 runs as they fell 13-0.

Suffolk scored one run in the third inning before they exploded in the fourth to take control.  Frasca, senior designated hitter Julien Plana (Miami, FL) and Cameron all scored in the inning and each registered an RBI in the frame. The Rams tacked on three more in the fifth inning, before exploding for four more in the top of the sixth.  Suffolk was able to score one more in the top of the seventh to close out the game.

Freshman pitcher Kevin Sinatra (East Boston, MA) (3-0) pitched a complete game shutout and allowed just two hits. RIC sophomore Jake Murray (Middletown, RI) (1-2) went 3.1 innings, allowed seven hits, five runs (four earned) and struck out one. The bullpen went the remaining 3.2 innings, allowing eight runs with one strikeout.
