MCCARTHY POWERS BRIDGEWATER STATE
PAST RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE

Providence, R.I.Junior pitcher Kelly McCarthy (Burlington, MA) picked up wins in both games as Bridgewater State swept a doubleheader from Rhode Island College at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

 

The Bears (9-9) took game one, 12-0 (five innings), then powered past the Anchorwomen (8-4), 6-1, in the nightcap.

 

McCarthy was masterful in the pitching circle, going 2-0 and allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out 12, in 12 innings of work. Senior center fielder Karissa Pagan (Brockton, MA) went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI on the day. Junior third baseman Tara McCann (Fall River, MA) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one double and three RBI.

 The Bears put five runs across in the top of the first in the opener, paced by a pair of two-run doubles by junior first baseman Megan Cox (Dennis Port, MA) and sophomore shortstop Kristyna Flaherty (Burlington, MA).

 

 BSU put three across in the third to build an 8-0 lead, led by RBI singles from junior second baseman Courtney Leddy (Saugus, MA) and classmate left fielder Samantha LoPilato (Medford, MA). McCann capped the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly.

 

 Bridgewater put the contest away with a four-run fourth, which was highlighted by a two-run double from McCann. McCarthy allowed just one hit and struck out six to pick up the win. RIC junior starter Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI) took the loss (1-2), allowing eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits in three innings of work.

 

 The nightcap was scoreless through the first two innings until BSU went up, 1-0, in the third by scoring on an Anchorwomen error. BSU put across five runs in the fourth inning to go up, 6-0. Pagan knocked in two with a single and Leddy brought in one more with an RBI single.

 

The Anchorwomen scored their only run of the day in the bottom of the fourth as junior left fielder Sarah Molin (Seymour, CT) had an RBI single.

 

 McCarthy (8-4) picked up the win, allowing just one run on five hits to go along with six strikeouts. Leddy went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. RIC freshman starter Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) took the loss (3-1), allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits. She struck out two on the day.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Johnson & Wales on Wednesday, March 30 (4 p.m.).
