Boston, Mass.-UMass Boston freshman shortstop Alexa St. Angelo (Cranston, RI) went a combined 4-for-7 with five RBI and a pair of runs scored to lead the softball team to their first-ever sweep of Rhode Island College in a pair of contests played at the UMB Softball field on Saturday afternoon.


UMB (18-8, 5-1 LEC) won the first game by a score of 6-2 before topping the Anchorwomen (11-11, 2-4 LEC), 9-0 (5 innings) in game two.


In game one, RIC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when junior center fielder Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI) ripped an RBI single that drove in junior second baseman Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI).


The Beacons responded in the home half of the inning, scoring three runs, keyed by a two-RBI single to right center by junior first baseman Lauren Mitsiaris (Taunton, MA) and an RBI single by St. Angelo to take a 3-1 lead.


UMB was able to extend its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Mitsiaris knocked an RBI single, which scored junior second baseman Kaitlyn Morse (Arlington, MA) to make the score 4-1 Beacons. RIC got a run back in the top of the sixth when senior right fielder Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) notched an RBI single, but the Beacons were able to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and shut the door on the Anchorwomen in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

RIC freshman pitcher Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits, while striking out three in the loss (5-4). UMB freshman pitcher Annie Thomas (Lunenburg, MA) pitched 7.0 innings, allowing just two runs, one earned, on eight hits, while striking out three in the victory (10-3).


Following a scoreless first inning by both squads in game two, UMB kicked it into gear by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Beacons plated four more in the bottom of the third inning, keyed by a three-run homer by freshman center fielder Taylor Pawlina (Woonsocket, RI) to extend their lead to six, 6-0.


 UMB completed its scoring for the game in the bottom half of the fourth, plating three runs in the stanza to give the game its 9-0 final. St. Angelo keyed the outburst in the frame, ripping a double into left field that scored a pair of runs. UMB was able to tack on one more late to end the game early.


Freshman pitcher Vic Zechello (Westborough, MA) allowed just two hits in 5.0 innings of work and struck out four in the shutout victory (7-4). McCaughey went 3.1 innings, allowing nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits in the loss (4-3).


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play a doubleheader at Wheaton on Sunday, April 17 (noon).
