GAMBARDELLA WINS TWO IN, 6-3, LOSS
TO WESTERN CONNECTICUT

Providence, R.I.Freshman Matt Gambardella (Warwick, RI) earned a straight set (6-3, 6-2) win at No. 5 singles and paired with classmate Alan Esposito (Clinton, CT) for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles as the Rhode Island College men's tennis team fell to Western Connecticut, 6-3, in Little East Conference action played at the RIC Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon.

 

Western (5-9, 3-2 LEC) sophomore Marco Gobbato (Yonkers, NY) and senior Jason Hipona (Orange, CT) defeated RIC (2-12, 0-5 LEC) junior Brett Taggart (North Kingstown, RI) and Lee Tiberi (Smithfield, RI), 8-2, at No. 1 doubles.

 

Esposito and Gambardella picked up an 8-4 victory over WCSU sophomore Ben Cortez (Danbury, CT) and sophomore Adam Howard (Waterford, CT)  at No. 2 doubles.

Colonials' senior Romney Tiru (Waterbury, CT) and junior Matt O'Keefe (Cromwell, CT) defeated RIC junior Cory Duquette (Warwick, RI) and freshman Chandler Scott (Ashaway, RI), 8-2, at No. 3 doubles.

 

Gobbato downed Taggart (6-0, 6-0) at No. 1 singles, while Hipona bested Tiberi (5-7, 6-4, 6-2) at No. 2 singles.

 

Cortez defeated Scott (6-3, 6-1) and Tiru won (6-7, 6-3, 6-4) against Esposito at third and fourth singles, respectively.

 

Gambardella defeated Howard at No. 5 and Duquette defeated O'Keefe (1-6, 6-1, 6-3) at sixth singles to close out the match.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference action at Bridgewater State on Saturday, April 30 (noon).
