2016 Rhode Island College
Menís Outdoor Track & Field Season Summary

Providence, R.I.-Head Coach Kevin Jacksonís menís outdoor track & field team closed out the 2016 season by sending one student-athlete to the 2016 NCAA Div. III Menís Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, hosted by Wartburg College on May 26-28. RIC walked away from the championships with a National Champion and All-American, while finishing in a tie for 24th (81 teams) with a score of 10.0.

 

Prior to the National Championships, the Anchormen placed 26th (38 teams) with a score of 8.0 at the N.E. Open Championships, hosted by Southern Connecticut on May 13-14. RIC finished 17th (31 teams) with a score of 16.0 at the N.E. Div. III Championships, hosted by Springfield College on May 7.

 

RIC placed sixth (11 teams) in the Alliance and third (seven teams) in the Little East Conference at the 2016 N.E. Alliance Championships, hosted by UMass Dartmouth on April 30.

 

 

 

Senior Christian Colavecchio (Foster, RI) finished second in the hammer (50.77m) and sixth in the discus (36.91m) at the Salisbury Elite Final Qualifying Meet on May 19. He finished 19th in the hammer (45.65m) at the N.E. Open Championships on May 13. Colavecchio finished 11th in the hammer (44.93m) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Apr. 5-7. He earned N.E. Alliance honors by finishing fourth in the hammer (50.57m), while also finishing eighth in the discus (38.36m) and 13th in the javelin (46.70m; season-best), at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. Colavecchio finished third in the hammer (50.89m), eighth in the discus (35.76m), 11th in the javelin (45.59m) and 24th in the shot (10.57m; season-best) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. He finished sixth in the hammer (46.11m), eighth in the discus (38.32m) and 15th in the javelin (45.88m) at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. Colavecchio finished 12th in the discus (37.80m) and 20th in the javelin (44.02m) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. He finished third in the hammer (51.11m; season-best), fourth in the discus (39.78m; season-best), 10th in the javelin (45.43m) and 18th in the shot (10.56m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

As a junior in 2015, Colavecchio placed 19th in the hammer (42.20m) at the N.E. Open Championships on May 8-9. He earned All-New England honors with an eighth place finish in the hammer (50.25m; season-best) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Apr. 30-May 2. Colavecchio placed 13th in the javelin (46.23m; season-best), 21st in the hammer (32.21m) and 33rd in the shot (10.34m) at the Alliance Championships on Apr. 25. He finished ninth in the hammer (44.70m), ninth in the javelin (45.94m), 14th in the shot (11.11m; season-best) and 24th in the discus (26.84m; season-best) at the Eric Loeschner Invitational on Apr. 18.

 

Colavecchio finished 11th in the hammer (44.53m), 12th in the javelin (45.19m) and 21st in the shot (9.65m) at the Brown Invitational on Apr. 11. He placed fourth in the hammer (42.36m) and 27th in the javelin (37.55m) at the Corsair Invitational on Apr. 4. Colavecchio placed seventh in the hammer (42.60m), 18th in the shot (9.99m) and 23rd in the discus (26.10m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Mar. 28.

 

As a sophomore in 2014, Colavecchio earned N.E. Alliance honors with a fourth place finish in the hammer (43.52m; season-best) and also finished 16th in the javelin (39.72m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 27. He placed third in the hammer (41.15m), fourth in the javelin (44.04m) and ninth in the discus (26.43m) at the Silfen Invitational on April 19. Colavecchio placed sixth in the javelin (47.48m; season-best) and 11th in the hammer (38.65m) at the Brown Invitational on April 12. He placed ninth in the hammer (38.89m) and 10th in the javelin (45.70m) at the Corsair Invitational on April 5. Colavecchio finished 19th in the javelin (38.98m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on March 29.

 

As a freshman in 2013, Colavecchio placed 24th in the hammer (33.37m) and 26th in the javelin (39.94m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 27. He finished ninth in the javelin (37.33m) and 10th in the hammer (37.22m; season-best) at the Silfen Invitational on April 20. Colavecchio placed 21st in the hammer (34.12m) and 26th in the javelin (32.85m) at the Brown Invitational on April 13. He finished 16th in the javelin (36.94m) at the Corsair Invitational on April 6. Colavecchio placed 13th in the javelin (44.08m; season-best) and 15th in the hammer (35.84m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on March 30.

 

Colavecchio is a radiology major and a 2012 graduate of Cranston High School West.

 

Senior Edward Cummins (Lincoln, RI) captured the National Championship and earned All-American honors by finishing first in the hammer (62.19m; season-best/program record) at the NCAA National Championships on May 26-28. He finished second in the hammer (61.15m) at the N.E. Open Championships on May 13. Cummins earned All-N.E. honors with a first place finish in the hammer (57.86m), while also finishing 14th in the discus (39.94m), at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Apr. 5-7. He earned a trio of N.E. Alliance honors, finishing first in the hammer (60.26m), fifth in the shot (13.75m; season-best) and sixth in the discus (39.62m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. Cummins finished first in the hammer (57.94m), third in the discus (42.03m; season-best) and sixth in the shot (13.10m) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. He finished first in the hammer (57.65m), fifth in the discus (40.36m) and seventh in the shot (13.26m) at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. Cummins finished first in the hammer (60.10m) and seventh in the discus (39.48m) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. He finished first in the hammer (57.80m), third in the discus (40.84m) and seventh in the shot (12.55m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

As a junior in 2015, Cummins earned All-American honors with a sixth place finish in the hammer (59.12m; season-best) at the NCAA National Championships on May 21-23. He earned All-ECAC accolades with a sixth place finish in the hammer (57.23m) at the ECAC Championships on May 14-15. Cummins earned All-New England honors, finishing fourth in the hammer (58.54m) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Apr. 30-May 2. He earned a trio of N.E. Alliance honors, finishing first in the hammer (56.82m), seventh in the discus (40.13m) and eighth in the shot (13.39m; season-best) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 25. Cummins placed first in the hammer (57.66m) and sixth in the discus (39.21m) at the Eric Loeschner Invitational on Apr. 18. He finished first in the hammer (58.20m) and ninth in the discus (40.81m; season-best) at the Brown Invitational on Apr. 11. Cummins finished first in the hammer (51.40m), sixth in the discus (38.30m) and 11th in the shot (11.93m) at the Corsair Invitational on Apr. 4. He finished second in the hammer (55.26m) and sixth in the discus (35.79m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Mar. 28.

 

As a sophomore in 2014, Cummins placed 15th in the hammer (55.13m) at the 2014 NCAA Div. III Outdoor  Track and Field Championships on May 22-24. He earned All-ECAC honors after finishing fourth in the hammer (54.91m) at the ECAC Championships on May 15-16. Cummins was the N.E. Alliance Champion in the hammer (55.68m; season-best) and also placed seventh in the discus (41.92m; season-best) and 10th in the shot (12.26m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 27. He placed first in the hammer (51.19m), second in the discus (40.07m) and third in the shot (12.22m) at the Silfen Invitational on April 19. Cummins took second in the hammer (52.86m), fifth in the shot (12.21m) and eighth in the discus (38.98m) at the Brown Invitational on April 12. He took first place in the hammer (51.54m) and also placed 10th in the discus (36.86m) and 11th in the shot (12.31m; season-best) at the Corsair Invitational on April 5. Cummins took first place in the hammer (51.97m) and added sixth place finishes in both the shot (12.21m) and the discus (33.08m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on March 29.

 

As a freshman in 2013, Cummins was named the 2013 Little East Conference Rookie Field Athlete of the Year. He placed 13th in the hammer (50.29m) at the ECAC Championships on May 16-17. Cummins earned All-New England honors in the hammer with a sixth place (52.56m; season-best) finish at the N.E. Div. III Championships on May 4. He earned N.E. Alliance honors and was the Little East Champion with a second place finish in the hammer (50.40m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 27. Cummins also placed 13th in the discus (38.55m; season-best). He placed second in the hammer (50.03m) and 11th in the discus (31.65m) at the Silfen Invitational on April 20. Cummins placed third in the hammer throw (51.75m) and 13th in the discus (36.02m) at the Brown Invitational on April 13. He placed first in the hammer (49.52m), while also placing 10th in the discus (35.67m) and 15th in the shot (11.67m) at the Corsair Invitational on April 6. Cummins placed second in the hammer (48.90m) and seventh in the discus (38.32m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on March 30. Cummins was named the Little East Rookie Field Athlete of the Week five times.

 

Cummins is a radiology major and a 2012 graduate of Lincoln High School.

 

Senior Kevin Redmond (Wakefield, RI) finished 16th in the shot (12.21m; season-best), while also competing in the hammer at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. He finished 15th in the hammer (37.08m; season-best) and 17th in the shot (11.74m) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. Redmond finished 19th in the hammer (35.72m) and 25th in the shot (11.32m) at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. He finished 22nd in the shot (11.73m) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. Redmond finished 10th in the shot (11.10m) and 22nd in the hammer (31.02m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

As a junior in 2015, Redmond finished 26th in the shot (11.42m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 25. He placed 10th in the shot (11.81m) and 21st in the hammer (30.51m) at the Eric Loeschner Invitational on Apr. 18. Redmond placed 13th in the shot (11.97m; season-best) at the Brown Invitational on Apr. 11. He finished 12th in the hammer (32.25m) and 14th in the shot (11.47m) at the Corsair Invitational on Apr. 4. He finished 10th in the shot (11.71m), 20th in the hammer (33.65m; season-best) and 24th in the discus (22.88m; season-best) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Mar. 28.

 

Redmond is a justice studies major and a 2012 graduate of South Kingstown High School.

 

Junior Colin Cabral (Cumberland, RI) finished 10th in the hammer (46.26m; season-best), 18th in the shot (12.95m) and 22nd in the javelin (45.90m) N.E. Div. III Championships on Apr. 5-7. He earned N.E. Alliance honors with a third place finish in the shot (13.89m; season-best), while also finishing seventh in the discus (39.24m; season-best), seventh in the hammer (45.46m) and ninth in the javelin (51.46m; season-best) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. Cabral finished fifth in the shot (13.24m), sixth in the javelin (50.23m), ninth in the hammer (42.07m) and 17th in the discus (33.44m) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. He finished fourth in the shot (13.59m), eighth in the javelin (50.20m), 10th in the hammer (42.59m) and 15th in the discus (35.79m) at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. Cabral finished seventh in both the shot (13.34m) and the javelin (48.08m), ninth in the hammer (45.40m) and 10th in the discus (38.05m) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. He finished fourth in the shot (12.87m), fifth in the javelin (48.44m), sixth in the hammer (43.12m) and 11th in the discus (35.83m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Junior Joel Ikuejamofo (Providence, RI) finished 22nd in the 400m (52.07) N.E. Div. III Championships on Apr. 5-7. He finished ninth in the 400m (50.54; season-best), while also competing as a member of the eighth place 4x400m relay (3:28.86), at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. Ikuejamofo finished ninth in the 400m (51.56) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. He finished 18th in the 400m (52.60), while also competing as a member of the sixth place 4x400m relay (3:30.32), at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. Ikuejamofo finished 13th in the 400m (51.83) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. He finished third in the 400m (51.24) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Junior Seth Larbi (Pawtucket, RI) finished 13th in the hammer (41.73m; season-best) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. He finished 11th in the hammer (41.14m), 27th in the shot (9.63m) and 27th in the discus (29.24m; season-best) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. Larbi finished 34th in the shot (10.55m; season-best) and 35th in the discus (28.40m) at the 2016 Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. He finished 20th in the hammer (39.46m) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. Larbi finished 11th in the hammer (38.68m), 28th in the discus (26.79m) and 31st in the shot (9.43m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Junior John Vicario (Johnston, RI) competed as a member of the seventh place 4x100m relay (43.89) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. He finished 52nd in the 100m (12.79; season-best) and 54th in the 200m (27.26; season-best), while also competing as a member of the ninth place 4x100m relay (45.97), at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. He finished 71st in the 100m (12.94) and 77th in the 200m (28.14) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. He finished 23rd in the 200m (29.28) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Sophomore Jake Brierly (Lincoln, RI) finished 23rd in the hammer (42.51m) at the N.E. Open Championships on May 13. He finished 17th in the hammer (43.27m) N.E. Div. III Championships on Apr. 5-7. Brierly finished eighth in the hammer (45.24m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. He competed in the hammer and discus at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. Brierly finished eighth in the hammer (43.09m) at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. He finished seventh in the hammer (47.17m; season-best) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. Brierly finished fourth in the hammer (44.91m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Sophomore Jonathan Carney (Bristol, RI) finished 12th in the 10,000m (35:45.90; season-best) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. He finished 17th in the 5,000m (17:19.17) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. Carney finished 15th in the 10,000m (36:05.39) at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. He finished 13th in the 5,000m (16:54.90; season-best) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. Carney finished 29th in the 800m (2:18.62; season-best) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Sophomore Matthew Charles (North Providence, RI) finished 15th in the 200m (23.70), 17th in the 100m (11.70) and 23rd in the long jump (5.07m), while also competing as a member of the seventh place 4x100m relay (43.89) and the eighth place 4x400m relay (3:28.86), at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. He finished 20th in the 100m (11.54) and 22nd in the long jump (5.35m; season-best), while also competing as a member of the ninth place 4x100m relay (45.97) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. Charles finished third in the 200m (22.29), sixth in the 100m (11.07) and 11th in the long jump (5.91m), while also competing as a member of the sixth place 4x400m relay (3:30.32) and the 10th place 4x100m relay (46.44), at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. He finished 10th in the 200m (23.13; season-best) and 17th in the 100m (11.39; season-best) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. Charles finished second in the 200m (23.22) and ninth in the 100m (11.61) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Sophomore Kevin Hernando (Beverly, NJ) finished 25th in the discus (30.35m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. He finished 20th in the discus (32.31m) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. Hernando placed 21st in the discus (33.39; season-best) at the 2016 Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. He finished 19th in the discus (31.19m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Sophomore Vincent Santos (Narragansett, RI) was named the teamís MVP. He finished sixth in the 110m hurdles (16.37) at the Salisbury Elite Final Qualifying Meet on May 19. Santos finished 23rd in the 110m hurdles (19.47) at the N.E. Open Championships on May 13. He finished ninth in the 110m hurdles (16.03) N.E. Div. III Championships on Apr. 5-7. Santos earned N.E. Alliance honors with a fourth place finish in the 110m hurdles (15.75; season-best), while also finishing 13th in the 400m hurdles (1:00.51) and 18th in the triple jump (11.66m), while competing as a member of the seventh place 4x100m relay (43.89) and the eighth place 4x400m relay (3:28.86), at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. He finished second in the 110m hurdles (16.06) and 12th in the triple jump (11.22m), while also competing as a member of the 4x100m relay (45.97), at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. Santos finished ninth in the 110m hurdles (16.28), ninth in the 400m hurdles (1:00.64) and 10th in the triple jump (11.96m; season-best), while also competing as a member of the sixth place 4x400m relay (3:30.32) and 10th place 4x100m relay (46.44), at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. He finished 11th in the 110m hurdles (16.14) and 15th in the 400m hurdles (1:00.65) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. Santos finished second in the 110m hurdles (16.22) and seventh in the 400m hurdles (1:00.05; season-best) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Sophomore Shamar Spruill (Providence, RI) finished third in the hammer (50.62m) at the Salisbury Elite Final Qualifying Meet on May. 19. He finished 10th in the hammer (50.15m) at the N.E. Open Championships on May 13. Spruill earned All-N.E. honors with a third place finish in the hammer (52.18m; season-best) N.E. Div. III Championships on Apr. 5-7. He earned N.E. Alliance honors with a sixth place finish in the hammer (48.59m), while also finishing 12th in the discus (35.45m), at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. Spruill finished fourth in the hammer (50.70m) and 21st in the shot (11.03m) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. He finished fourth in the hammer (47.42m), 12th in the discus (36.62m) and 27th in the shot (11.09m; season-best) at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. Spruill finished sixth in the hammer (49.09m) and 14th in the discus (36.28m) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. He finished sixth in the discus (37.86m; season-best) and 14th in the shot (10.68m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Freshman Destin Bibemi (Providence, RI) finished 17th in the 400m (51.03) N.E. Div. III Championships on Apr. 5-7. He earned N.E. Alliance honors with a sixth place finish in the 200m (23.17), while also finishing 18th in the 400m (51.67) and competing as a member of the seventh place 4x100m relay (43.89) and the eighth place 4x400m relay (3:28.86), at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. Bibemi finished eighth in the 400m (51.52) and 17th in the 200m (23.13; season-best), while also competing as a member of the ninth place 4x100m relay (45.97) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. He finished eighth in the 400m (51.69) and 17th in the 200m (23.03), while also competing as a member of the sixth place 4x400m relay (3:30.32) and the 10th place 4x100m relay (46.44), at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. Bibemi finished third in the 400m (50.83; season-best) and 16th in the 200m (23.41) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. He finished seventh in the 400m (52.31) and 12th in the 200m (24.13) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Freshman Mohammed Chaghlil (Warwick, RI) finished 34th in the 1,500m (4:56.03; season-best) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. He finished 62nd in the 1,500m (5:05.88) at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16.

 

 Freshman Jeff Garson (Cumberland, RI) finished 19th in the 5,000m (18:06.44) and 28th in the 1,500m (4:52.21) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. He finished 28th in the 1,500m (4:40.95; season-best) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. Garson finished 51st in the 5,000m (17:44.27; season-best) at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. He finished 75th in the 800m (2:22.63; season-best) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. Garson finished 40th in the 1,500m (4:58.60) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Freshman Newell Roberts (Providence, RI) competed in the pole vault N.E. Div. III Championships on Apr. 5-7. He earned N.E. Alliance honors with a third place finish in the pole vault (4.40m; season-best/program record) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. Roberts finished third in the pole vault (4.25m) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. He finished third in the pole vault (3.80m) at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. Roberts finished fourth in the pole vault (4.10m) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. He finished second in the pole vault (4.25m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.

 

Freshman Adam Stomberg (West Greenwich, RI) finished 25th in the javelin (35.78m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on Apr. 30. He finished 23rd in the hammer (27.09m; season-best) and 31st in the discus (28.18m; season-best) at the Sean Collier Invitational on Apr. 23. Stomberg finished 29th in the hammer (26.88m), 38th in the javelin (34.93m) and 41st in the discus (23.49m) at the Silfen Invitational on Apr. 16. He finished 30th in the javelin (34.17m) at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Apr. 9. Stomberg finished 17th in the javelin (38.69m; season-best) and 26th in the hammer (26.48m) at the Coast Guard Invitational on Apr. 2.
