BRANDEIS DOWNS RIC, 85-68

Waltham, Mass.-Rhode Island College freshman forward Justin Campbell (New Haven, CT) scored a team-best 21 points and added seven rebounds as the menís basketball team fell, 85-58, at Brandeis in non-conference action played at Red Auerbach Arena on Saturday afternoon.

 

The Judges (3-0) jumped out to a 9-2 advantage 5:03 into the first half following a pair of made free throws by junior guard Tim Reale (Mason, OH). Brandeis opened up its advantage to as large as nine, but a pair of made free throws by Campbell cut the Anchormenís (1-2) deficit down to three, 17-14, with 8:32 remaining in the half. The Judges were able to pull away from the Anchorwomen down the stretch however, outscoring the visitors, 23-12, down the stretch to take a 14-point, 40-26 lead into the halftime break.

Campbell led the Anchormen with 10 points in the half on 100 percent (3-for-3) shooting from the floor. The Judges were led by junior guard Robinson Vilmont (Cambridge, MA), who scored 14 points. RIC shot 30.8 percent (8-for-26) in the half compared to 45.5 percent (10-for-22) by the Judges.

 

Brandeis opened the second half strong, going on an 8-2 run over the first 4:35 to take a 20-point, 48-28, lead. Three straight layups by the Anchormen cut the deficit down to 14 points, 48-34, but the Judges proved too dominant on the defensive end, outscoring the Anchormen, 37-24, over the remainder of the half to secure the win.

 

RIC shot 36.4 percent (20-for-55) from the floor for the game and struggled from three-point range, shooting just 28.6 percent (6-for-21) from downtown. Sophomore guard Chris Green (Taunton, MA) scored 13 points on 50.0 percent shooting for the day.

 

Vilmont led all scorers with 22 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Reale pitched in with 14 points, while junior center John Powell (Ashland, MA) rounded out the Brandeis trio in double digits with a 10-point effort. The Judges shot 53.6 percent (30-for-56) from the field, 40.0 percent (4-for-10) from three-point range  and a blistering 84.0  percent (21-for-25) from the charity stripe for the game.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Bridgewater State on Tuesday, Nov. 24 (7:30 p.m.)
