ANCHORMEN PICK UP WINS OVER
PLYMOUTH STATE AND SOUTHERN MAINE
TO CLOSE OUT FALL SEMESTER

Providence, R.I.--Rhode Island College senior 141 lbs. Shawn Giblin (Cranston, RI), the topped ranked wrestler in New England at his weight,  scored two victories by pin as the Anchormen went 2-0, topping Plymouth State, 30-6, and Southern Maine, 35-9, in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) action held at the RIC Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.

 

RIC downed Plymouth State, 30-6, in the first match. The Anchormen (4-0, 4-0 NEWA) jumped out to an early lead with Giblinís pin to put the hosts up 9-0. RIC jumped ahead, 16-0, following a 15-9 decision by senior 157 lbs. Chris Kelly (Franklin, MA). Plymouth (2-2) responded at 165 lbs. with junior Clay Callahan (Milford, CT) scoring an 8-2 decision over RIC sophomore Vincent Drago (Hauppauge, NY). The Anchormen cruised the rest of the match, highlighted by a tech. fall victory by junior 285 lbs. John Georges (Cranston, RI), 17-2.

The match between the Panthers and the Huskies (1-4) was the second contest of the day, with the Panthers taking a tight, 27-18, victory. Following a forfeit victory by PSU at 133 lbs., the Huskies responded with three straight wins, highlighted by a pin by junior 157 lbs. CJ Luth (Milford, CT) at 4:30. PSU responded with junior 165 lbs. Clay Callahan (Nashua, NH) picking up a pin in 1:14 in the next match. PSU won four of the final five bouts, which included a pin, to secure the win.

The final match of the day saw RIC score four pins to cruise to a convincing, 35-9, victory over USM. Holding a slim, 8-6, lead following the matches at 133, 141, 149 and 157 lbs., the Anchormen used victories by fall in four of the next five matches to put the match away.
