ALEX MOORE SCORES 27
IN, 71-63, LOSS TO UMASS BOSTON

Providence, R.I.-Rhode Island College junior guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) scored 27 points to go along with five assists as the women’s basketball team fell, 71-63, to UMass Boston in Little East Conference action played at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Beacons (8-5, 1-2 LEC) used a stifling defense to take a 20-8 advantage into the second quarter. The Anchorwomen (3-8, 1-2 LEC) held a 3-1 advantage just 45 seconds into the game, but a 16-0 run, which was capped by a three-pointer from sophomore forward Raven Kelsey (Boston, MA) with 1:56 left in the opening stanza, put the visitors in the driver’s seat. The second quarter was much closer, with the Anchorwomen outscoring the Beacons, 17-14, in the frame.

RIC shot just 28.0 percent (7-for-25) from the floor in the half, while the Beacons were a blistering 62.5 percent (5-for-8) from downtown, which contributed to their, 34-25, halftime lead.

The third quarter was a back and forth battle, with neither team gaining the advantage and finished with each squad scoring 21 points to give UMB a nine-point edge heading into the final 10 minutes. A pair of free throws by Moore with 6:38 left in the game cut the deficit down to two, 57-55, but the Beacons used clutch free throw shooting in the final minutes of the game to clinch the victory.

The Anchorwomen shot 38.3 percent (18-for-47) from the floor, 40.0 percent (8-for-20) from three-point range and 59.4 percent (19-for-32) from the charity stripe for the game. Moore’s 27 led all scorers. Junior guard Meghan Reall (Smithfield, RI) scored nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from long range.

Boston shot 39.6 percent (21-for-53) from the field, 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from three-point range and 63.2 percent (24-for-38) from the free throw line as a team. Kelsey led the way with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Beacons.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at home against Southern Maine on Wednesday, Jan. 13 (5:30 p.m.).
