Women’s Swimming Season Summary

Providence, R.I.-Head Coach Ron Sutherland’s women’s swimming team finished the 2015-16 season with a 1-5 overall record. The Anchorwomen’s lone victory was against Western Connecticut, 115-108, on Jan. 24.

 

The Anchorwomen wrapped up the 2015-16 schedule with a 15th place (21 teams) finish at the 2016 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships on Feb. 12-14. Prior to that, the Anchorwomen earned a sixth place (seven teams) finish at the 2016 Little East Conference Championships with a score of 92.0.

 

 

 

Senior Marykate McCutcheon (Smithfield, RI) finished 12th in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:35.77; season-best), while also competing as a member of the 12th-place 800-yard freestyle relay (8:56.99), 14th-place 400-yard freestyle relay (4:07.12) and the 15th-place 200-yard medley relay (2:06.28), at the NEISDA Championships on Feb. 12-14. She finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:32.62; season-best) and eighth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:37.22), while also competing as a member of the fifth place 400-yard freestyle relay (4:11.05) and the fifth place 200-yard medley relay (2:07.16), at the 2016 Little East Championships on Jan. 30.

 

McCutcheon finished first in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:12.16) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:12.07; season-best), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:06.03) and the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.83), at Western Connecticut on Jan. 24. She finished the first in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.41; season-best) and 1,000-yard freestyle (12:29.18), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley (2:07.02) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:56.44) teams, against Husson on on Jan. 15.

 

As a junior in 2014-15, McCutcheon placed second in both the 100-yard butterfly (1:08.77) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.21) against Eastern Connecticut on Jan. 30. She placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.36), 100-yard freestyle (1:01.24) and the 200-yard IM (2:30.76) against Western Connecticut on Jan. 25. McCutcheon captured first place in both the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.02) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:14.89) against Husson on Jan. 17. She finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:56.02) and second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.51) vs. Plymouth State on Jan. 10.

 

McCutcheon placed eighth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.34) and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:32.37) at the Little East Championships on Dec. 6. She took first place in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:13.35) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:58.44) in a victory over the University of St. Joseph on Oct. 26. McCutcheon opened the season by placing sixth in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:11.98) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.96) at the Blue Jay Pentathlon on Oct. 18.

 

As a sophomore in 2013-14, she placed 14th in the 200 backstroke (2:20.73) and 21st in the 100 backstroke (1:07.53), while also placing 17th in the 100 freestyle (58.06; season-best), at the NEISDA Championships on Feb. 14-16. McCutcheon took first place in both the 200 backstroke (2:20.01; season-best) and the 1,650 freestyle (19:28.76; season-best) at Western Connecticut on Nov. 22. She finished first in the 1,000 freestyle (11:42.32; season-best), 100 freestyle (1:00.73) and the 100 butterfly (1:05.69; season-best) at Western New England on Nov. 1. McCutcheon finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:05.75) and third in both the 100 freestyle (59.31) and the 100 backstroke (1:06.28; season-best) at the Blue Jay Pentathlon on Oct. 26.

 

As a freshman in 2012-13, McCutcheon was named the team MVP. She placed third in the 1,000 freestyle with a season-best time of 11:00.43 and placed third in the 1,650 freestyle with a season-best time of 18:21.30 to attain All-New England honors in both events at the NEISDA Championships on Feb. 8-10. She also placed seventh in the 500 freestyle with a season-best time of 5:21.81. McCutcheon earned a pair of first place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:04.47) and the 500 freestyle (5:33.94) at Eastern Connecticut on Feb. 2. She took first place in the 200 freestyle (2:06.80), the 100 freestyle (59.22) and the 500 freestyle (5:34.99) at the Western Connecticut double duals on Jan. 27. McCutcheon took first place in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 27.16, and also placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:08.21) and the 1650 freestyle (19:01.76) at Husson on Jan. 1.

 

She placed first in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time of 2:23.12, and also placed first in the 1,000 freestyle (11:26.36) and the 500 freestyle (5:35.48) at the Plymouth State double duals on Jan. 12. McCutcheon earned All-Little East honors by taking second place in the 500 freestyle (5:21.89) and also placed fifth in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 2:01.44 at the Little East Championships on Dec. 1. She took first place in the 500 freestyle (5:33.30) and also finished second in the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 1:06.10 and fourth in the 100 freestyle with a season-high time of 59.03 at the Louise Goodrum Invitational on Nov. 10. McCutcheon placed first in the 100 freestyle (59.76), the 500 freestyle (5:43.90), and the 1,000 freestyle (11:33.02) at Western New England on Nov. 2. She took first place in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 2:06.34, finished first in the 100 backstroke with a season-best time of 1:06.38, and placed first in the 500 freestyle (5:44.51) at the University of St. Joseph on Oct. 27.

 

McCutcheon is a music major and a 2012 graduate of Smithfield High School.

 

Junior Abbie Leazes (Providence, RI) finished 15th in the 400-yard IM (5:14.20; season-best) and 17th in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:20.19; season-best), while also competing as a member of the 12th-place 800-yard freestyle relay (8:56.99), the 14th-place 400-yard freestyle relay (4:07.12) and the 15th-place 200-yard medley relay (2:06.28), at the NEISDA Championships on Feb. 12-14. She finished seventh in the 200-yard butterfly (2:50.32; season-best) and 10th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:49.04; season-best), while also competing as a member of the fifth place 400-yard freestyle (4:11.05) and 200-yard medley (2:07.16) relays, at the Little East Championships on Jan. 30. Leazes finished first in both the 400-yard IM (5:26.29) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:01.87), second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.02; season-best), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.83), at Western Connecticut on Jan. 24.

 

She finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:16.75; season-best), the 100-yard butterfly (1:20.50) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:11.36), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:56.44), vs. Husson on Jan. 15. Leazes finished first in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:18.21; season-best) and the 200-yard IM (2:39.41) was third in the 200-yard breast (2:59.02; season-best), while also competing as a member of the second place 200-yard medley relay (2:10.92) vs. Plymouth State on Dec. 4. She finished first in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.31), the 400-yard IM (5:19.98) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:00.23) at Western New England on Nov. 20. Leazes finished first in both the 200-yard IM (2:37.68; season-best) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:09.9) and second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:41.89), while also competing as a member of the third place 400-yard medley relay team (4:52.35). at Eastern Connecticut on Nov. 14.

 

She finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (6:05.41), eighth in both the 1,650-yard freestyle relay (21:03.97) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:37.85; season-best), ninth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:19.62; season-best), 10th in the 200-yard freestyle (2:21.20), 20th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.10), 22nd in the 50-yard freestyle (29.69; season-best), while also competing as a member of the ninth place 200-yard medley relay (2:13.67) and the sixth place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.41), at the Louise Goodrum Invitational on Nov. 7. Leazes finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:53.19), the 100-yard butterfly (1:19.92) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:13.63), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:12.12), at the University of St. Joseph (CT) on Oct. 24.

 

Junior Rachel Soria (Pawtucket, RI) finished 16th in the 100-yard back (1:15.38; season-best) and 20th in the 200-yard back (2:45.90; season-best), while also competing as a member of the fifth place 200-yard medley relay (2:07.16), at the 2016 Little East Championships on Jan. 30. She finished second in both the 50-yard backstroke (34.40; season-best) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.45) and third in the 50-yard freestyle (33.06; season-best), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:06.03), at Western Connecticut on Jan. 24.

 

Sophomore Sydney Curran (North Kingstown, RI) earned All-New England honors with an eighth place finish in the 50-yard breast (33.23; season-best), while also finishing 15th in both the 100-yard breast (1:14.54) and the 100-yard IM (1:07.60; season-best), while also competing as a member of the 12th-place 800-yard freestyle relay (8:56.99), the 14th-place 400-yard freestyle relay (4:07.12) and the 15th-place 200-yard medley relay (2:06.28), at the NEISDA Championships on Feb. 12-14. She finished fourth in the 100-yard breast (1:14.19) and sixth in the 200-yard breast (2:47.70), while also competing as a member of the fifth place 400-yard freestyle relay (4:11.05) and the fifth place 200-yard medley relay (2:07.16), at the Little East Championship on Jan. 30.

 

Curran finished first in the 50-yard butterfly (30.04; season-best), the 100-yard breast (1:14.60) and the 100-yard IM (1:09.53), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:06.03), at Western Connecticut on Jan. 24. She finished first in the 50-yard butterfly (30.45), second in both the 100-yard breast (1:14.18; season-best) and the 50-yard breast (33.65), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:07.02), vs. Husson on Jan. 15. Curran finished first in the 50-yard breast (33.36), second in both the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.92; season-best) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:17.39; season-best), while also competing as a member of the second place 200-yard medley relay (2:10.92), vs. Plymouth State on Dec. 4. She finished first in both the 100-yard IM (1:10.62) and the 100-yard breast (1:16.04), and was second in the 100-yard fly (1:09.93) at Western New England on Nov. 20.

 

Curran finished first in the 50-yard breast (34.72), second in the 100-yard fly (1:10.73) and third in the 50-yard backstroke (35.49; season-best), while also competing as a member of the third place 400-yard medley relay team (4:52.35), at Eastern Connecticut on Nov. 14. She finished first in the 100-yard breast (1:16.34), second in the 50-yard breast (33.86), fifth in both the 50-yard butterfly (30.73) and the 100-yard IM (1:09.81), ninth in the 50-yard freestyle (28.06; season-best), while also competing as a member of the ninth place 200-yard medley relay (2:13.67) and the sixth place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.41), at the Louise Goodrum Invitational on Nov. 7.

 

Curran finished first in the 100-yard breast (1:15.20), third in the 100-yard IM (1:10.23), eighth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:13.59; season-best), eighth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:03.36) and 14th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.45; season-best), while also competing as a member of the fifth place 200-yard freestyle relay (2:06.22) and the sixth place 200-yard medley relay (2:30.16), at the Blue Jay Pentathlon on Oct. 30. She finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:18.98; season-best), the 100-yard breast (1:16.27) and first in the 100-yard IM (1:09.45), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:12.12), at the University of St. Joseph (CT) on Oct. 24.

 

Freshman Madison Lane (Barrington, RI) finished third in both the 50-yard backstroke (36.41) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:05.40), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley (2:06.03) and 200-yard freestyle relays (1:58.83) at Western Connecticut on Jan. 24. She finished first in both the 50-yard backstroke (34.90) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.12), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley (2:07.02) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.44) relays, versus Husson on Jan. 15. Lane finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:45.30; season-best) and third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.56; season-best), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (2:09.69) and the second place 200-yard medley relay (2:10.92) vs. Plymouth State on Dec. 4. She finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.75) and second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:16.22) at Western New England on Nov. 20.

 

Lane finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (6:14.22; season-best) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.46), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (2:12.54) and the third place 400-yard medley relay (4:52.35), at Eastern Connecticut on Nov. 14. She finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle (6:15.54), 14th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:16.36), 15th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.99), 27th in the 50-yard freestyle (29.88; season-best), while also competing as a member of the ninth place 200-yard medley relay (2:13.67) and the sixth place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.41), at the Louise Goodrum Invitational on Nov. 7. Lane finished sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.88; season-best), 17th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:15.97) and 25th in the 100-yard breast (1:35.68; season-best), while also competing as a member of the fifth place 200-yard freestyle relay (2:06.22) and the sixth place 200-yard medley relay (2:30.16), at the Blue Jay Pentathlon on Oct. 30. She finished second in the 50-yard backstroke (34.48; season-best) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:15.52; season-best), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:12.12) and the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (2:12.12), at the University of St. Joseph (CT) on Oct. 24.

 

Freshman Courtney Payne (Waterford, CT) competed as a member of the 12th-place 800-yard freestyle relay (8:56.99), the 14th-place 400-yard freestyle relay (4:07.12) and the 15th-place 200-yard medley relay (2:06.28) at the NEISDA Championships on Feb. 12-14. She finished 10th in the 100-yard breast (1:22.19; season-best), 10th in the 200-yard breast (3:01.46; season-best) and 14th in the 50-yard freestyle (29.76; season-best), while also competing as a member of the fifth place 400-yard freestyle relay (4:11.05) at the Little East Championships on Jan. 30.

 

Payne finished second in the 50-yard breast (37.87; season-best), third in the 100-yard breast (1:25.54) and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:07.81), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.83), at Western Connecticut on Jan. 24. She finished third in both the 50-yard freestyle (30.02) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:24.14), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:07.02) and the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:56.44), vs. Husson on Jan. 15. Payne finished second in the 50-yard breaststroke (38.52), third in the 50-yard freestyle (30.33) and fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (3:05.77), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (2:09.69), vs. Plymouth State on Dec. 4.

 

She finished second in the 50-yard breast (38.34), the 50-yard freestyle (30.53) and second in the 100-yard IM (1:20.11; season-best) at Western New England on Nov. 20. Payne finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:28.39; season-best) and third in the 100-yard breast (1:28.28), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (2:12.54) and the third place 400-yard medley relay team (4:52.35), at Eastern Connecticut on Nov. 14. She finished 11th in the 50-yard breast (38.33), 12th in the 100-yard breast (1:25.83) and 22nd in the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.55; season-best), while also competing as a member of the ninth place 200-yard medley relay (2:13.67) and the sixth place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.41), at the Louise Goodrum Invitational on Nov. 7.

 

Payne finished 13th in the 100-yard breast (1:25.34), 18th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:07.33), 23rd in the 100-yard IM (1:21.90) and 28th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:22.06; season-best), while also competing as a member of the fifth place 200-yard freestyle relay (2:06.22) and the sixth place 200-yard medley relay (2:30.16), at the Blue Jay Pentathlon on Oct. 30. She finished first in the 50-yard breast (38.72), second in both the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.75) and the 100-yard breast (1:25.54), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (2:12.12), at the University of St. Joseph (CT) on Oct. 24.
