2015-16 Rhode Island College Wrestling Season Summary
(8-8 Overall; 7-5 in the New England Wrestling Association)
Eighth Place at the 2016 NCAA Regional Championships
29th Place at the 2016 NCAA National Championships

Providence, R.I.-Head Coach Jay Jones’ (Career Record 217-154-1; .585) Anchormen finished the 2015-16 season with an 8-8 overall record and a 7-5 mark against New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) opponents.

 

Rhode Island College sent two wrestlers to the 2016 NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships and finished 29th (53 teams) with a score of 12.5 on March 11-12.

 

Prior to that, the Anchormen placed eighth (18 teams) at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships held in Springfield, Mass. on Feb. 27-28 with a score of 51.0. Three Anchormen earned All-Northeast accolades by virtue of their performances.

 

RIC placed seventh (14 teams) with a 2-2 mark at the 2016 NEWA Dual Championships, hosted by Bridgewater State on Jan. 23.

 

 

 

Senior Ricondo Cole (Cranston, RI)) closed out his career with a 74-28 (.725) record to go along with 187 takedowns, 10 reversals, 52 escapes, 45 near-falls and 20 pins.

 

As a senior in 2015-16, Cole went 11-10 at 157 lbs. with 24 takedowns, eight escapes and five pins. He placed sixth at 165 lbs. at the Wildcat Open (Jan. 30).

 

As a junior in 2014-15, he was named Honorable Mention All-NEWA at 141 lbs. He finished the year with an 18-5 record at 141 lbs. to go along with 38 takedowns, two reversals, nine escapes, 11 near-falls and six pins. He placed third at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 22.

 

As a sophomore in 2013-14, he was named a Second Team NEWA All-Star at 141 lbs. Cole earned All-NCAA Northeast Regional honors with a fifth place finish on March 2. He finished the year with a 24-5 record to go along with 62 takedowns, one reversal, eight escapes, 19 near-falls and eight pins. He placed first at the 2013 Doug Parker Invitational and sixth at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

As a freshman in 2012-13, he was named the Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Year and was also named a First Team Pilgrim League All-Star. He went 21-8 at 133-141 lbs. with 63 takedowns, seven reversals, 27 escapes, 15 near-falls and one pin on the year. Cole took first place at 133 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 17 and placed sixth at 141 lbs. at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 10. During the season, he was named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie of the Week once and also garnered Pilgrim League Rookie of the Week honors on one occasion.

 

Cole is a mathematics major and a 2011 graduate of Cranston High School West.

 

Senior Brandon Conrad (East Bridgewater, MA) closed out his career with a 58-34 (.630) record to go along with 99 takedowns, 11 reversals, 74 escapes, 23 near-falls and 10 pins.

 

As a senior in 2015-16, Conrad earned All-American honors at 184 lbs. with a seventh place finish at the 2016 NCAA Div. III Wrestling National Championships on March 11-12. He earned All-Regional honors by placing third at 184 lbs. at the NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional on Feb. 27-28. He was also named a First Team NEWA All-Star. Conrad finished the season with a 26-8 record at 184 lbs. to go along with 41 takedowns, four reversals, 27 escapes, four near-falls and four pins. During the season, he placed second at both the Ithaca Invitational (Nov. 17) and the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 21).

 

As a junior in 2014-15, he finished the season with a 14-12 record at 174/184 lbs. to go along with 22 takedowns, 23 escapes, five near-falls and two pins.

 

As a sophomore in 2013-14, he was an Honorable Mention NEWA All-Star at 165 lbs. He closed out the season with a 15-12 record to go along with 28 takedowns, five reversals, 21 escapes, 14 near-falls and four pins. He finished fifth at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

As a freshman in 2012-13, Conrad went 3-2 at 174 lbs. to go along with eight takedowns, two reversals and three escapes.

 

Conrad is a business major and a 2011 graduate of Southeastern Regional Vocational High School.

 

Senior Jonathan Costa (New Bedford, MA) closed out his career with 43-32 (.573) record to go along with 83 takedowns, 21 reversals, 55 escapes, 17 near-falls and four pins.

 

As a senior in 2015-16, Costa went 13-12 at 149 lbs. to go along with 30 takedowns, five reversals, 23 escapes, two near-falls and one pin. He was named to the NEWA All-Academic Team.

 

As a junior in 2014-15, Costa was named an NWCA Scholar All-American and was an Honorable Mention to the All-NEWA team at 133 lbs. He finished the season with a 12-9 record to go along with 12 takedowns, four reversals, 10 escapes and eight near-falls. He placed first in the 141 lbs. class at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 22. Costa placed fourth at 133 lbs. at the Will Abele Invitational on Jan. 17. He earned All-Northeast Regional honors by virtue of a fourth place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Feb. 28-Mar. 1.

 

As a sophomore in 2013-14, finished the season with a 7-4 record at 133-141 lbs. to go along with 19 takedowns, one reversal, 12 escapes, one near-fall and one pin. He placed fourth at the 2013 Doug Parker Invitational.

 

As a freshman in 2012-13, Costa finished with a 5-4 record at 133 lbs. to go along with nine takedowns, four reversals, two escapes and three near-falls.

 

In 2011-12, Costa went 6-3 at 133 lbs. to go along with 13 takedowns, seven reversals, eight escapes, three near-falls and two pins before an injury cut short his season. He was granted a medical hardship waiver. Costa placed sixth at the Roger Williams Invitational.

 

He is a criminal justice major and a 2011 graduate of New Bedford High School.

 

Senior Shawn Giblin (Cranston, RI) closed out his RIC career with a 61-16 (.792) record to go along with 113 takedowns, 21 reversals, 46 escapes, 22 near-falls and 24 pins.

 

As a senior in 2015-16, Giblin earned All-American honors at 141 lbs. with an eighth place finish at the NCAA Div. III National Championships on March 11-12. He earned All-Regional honors with a first place finish at 141 lbs. at the NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Championship on Feb. 27-28. He was also named a First Team NEWA All-Star. He finished the season with a 21-4 overall record at 141 lbs. to go along with 37 takedowns, five reversals, 19 escapes, one near-fall and nine pins. During the season, he placed third at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 21).

 

As a junior in 2014-15, Giblin was named Honorable Mention All-NEWA at 149 lbs. He finished the season with a 17-6 record at 149 lbs. to go along with 21 takedowns, six reversals, eight escapes, seven near-falls and seven pins. He earned a spot on the All-Northeast Regional squad by virtue of his fifth place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships Feb. 28-Mar. 1. Giblin won the title at 149 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 22.

 

As a sophomore in 2011-12, he was one of two Anchormen to compete in the 2012 NCAA Div. III Championships held in La Crosse, WI on March 9-10. Giblin earned All-New England honors with a second place finish at the 2012 NEWA Championships on Feb. 25-26. He closed out the season with a 23-6 record at 141 lbs. to go along with 55 takedowns, 10 reversals, 19 escapes, 14 near-falls and eight pins. Giblin took first place at the Roger Williams Invitational on Nov. 12 and then placed third just a week later at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 19. He was named a Second Team Pilgrim League All-Star.

 

As a freshman in 2009-10, Giblin went 5-1 at 133 lbs. with one pin and one major decision while at Edinboro University. He placed third in the freshman/sophomore division at the EMU Open.

 

He is a youth development major with minors in both business and coaching and a 2009 graduate of Cranston High School West.

 

Senior Chris Kelly (Franklin, MA) closed out his career with 27-23 (.540) record to go along with 43 takedowns, 13 reversals, 53 escapes, 11 near-falls and nine pins.

 

As a senior in 2015-16, Kelly went 13-13 at 149 lbs. to go along with 24 takedowns, seven reversals, 29 escapes, six near-falls and two pins. He was named to the NEWA All-Academic Team.

 

As a junior in 2014-15, he went 8-4 at 149 lbs. with 10 takedowns, three reversals, seven escapes, three near-falls and four pins.

 

As a sophomore in 2013-14, Kelly went 6-6 at 149 lbs. to go along with nine takedowns, three reversals, 17 escapes, two near-falls and three pins.

 

He is a justice studies major and a 2012 graduate of Franklin High School.

 

Senior Kyle Lake (Toms River, NJ) closed out his career with a 23-27 (.460) record to go along with 40 takedowns, 11 reversals, 31 escapes, nine near-falls and six pins.

 

As a senior in 2015-16, Lake went 7-13 at 165 lbs. to go along with three takedowns, four reversals, three escapes and a pin. He was named to the NEWA All-Academic Team.

 

As a junior in 2014-15, he was 0-2 at 157 lbs. with one takedown.

 

As a sophomore in 2013-14, finished the season with a 16-12 record at 149-157 lbs. to go along with 36 takedowns, seven reversals, 28 escapes, nine near-falls and five pins. He finished fifth at 157 lbs. at the 2014 Dolphin Invitational.

 

He is a medical imaging major and a 2012 graduate of Toms River North High School

 

Junior Samuel Comfort (Woodville, MA) went 6-9 at 133 lbs. to go along with five takedowns, one reversal, nine escapes and four pins.

 

Junior Jake Dorman (Foxboro, MA) went 11-11 at 133 lbs. to go along with 24 takedowns, eight reversals, 27 escapes, three near-falls and two pins.

 

Junior John Georges (Cranston, RI) went 20-14 at 197 lbs. to go along with 29 takedowns, six reversals, 19 escapes, three near-falls and eight pins. During the season, he placed fourth at 285 lbs. at the Will Abele Invitational (Jan. 16) and fifth at 197 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 21).

 

Junior Michael Murphy (North Providence, RI) went 3-3 at 157 lbs. to go along with two takedowns and three escapes.

 

Junior Victor Zabalu (Hudson, MA) went 13-15 at 184 lbs. to go along with 37 takedowns, 10 reversals, 24 escapes, one near-fall and three pins. He placed sixth at the Doug Parker Invitational (Nov. 21).

 

Sophomore Vincent Drago (Hauppauge, NY) went 11-17 at 165 lbs. to go along with 11 takedowns, five reversals, 24 escapes and three pins.

 

Sophomore Kevin Hernando (Beverly, NJ) went 2-11 at 285 lbs. to go along with four takedowns, one reversal, three escapes and two pins.

 

Sophomore Brennan Liebel (Feeding Hills, MA) went 11-6 at 125 lbs. to go along with 26 takedowns, one reversal, four escapes, three near-falls and a pin.

 

Sophomore Stephen Masi (Cumberland, RI) earned All-Regional honors at 133 lbs. with a sixth place finish at the NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional on Feb. 27-28. He went 12-18 at 133 lbs. to go along with 25 takedowns, five reversals, 29 escapes and one pin. Masi was an Honorable Mention NEWA All-Star selection at 133 lbs. and also secured a spot on the league’s All-Academic Team.

 

Sophomore Saylee Phongsamphanh (Danielson, CT) went 2-19 at 125 lbs. to go along with six takedowns, three reversals, nine escapes, one near-fall and one pin.

 

Sophomore Armand Vaziri (Cranston, RI) went 1-12 at 157 lbs. to go along with two takedowns and four escapes.
