DEVIN HILL SCORES 22 AS ANCHORWOMEN OPEN SEASON WITH, 71-47, WIN OVER FARMINGDALE STATE

West Hartford, Conn.-Senior center Devin Hill (Danielson, CT) scored a game-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds to lead the Rhode Island College women’s basketball team to a season-opening victory over Farmingdale State, 71-47, in the opening round of the USJ Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night.

 

The Anchorwomen (1-0) will face Western New England, which defeated St. Joseph, 74-50, in the other semifinal matchup earlier this evening, tomorrow at 3 p.m.

 

The Anchorwomen raced out to an early lead over the Rams (0-1), taking a 22-14 advantage into the first quarter break. RIC kept the momentum going, outscoring FSU, 15-8, in the second quarter to take a 37-22 lead into the locker room for halftime.

 

RIC shot 36.1 percent (13-for-36) from the field in the half, while shooting 70.0 percent (7-for-10) from the charity stripe. The Rams shot 30.4 percent (7-for-23) and struggled from the free throw line, shooting just 35.7 percent (5-for-14).

RIC put the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring the Rams by a 22-13 margin. Both teams posted 12 points in the fourth, giving the Anchorwomen the 71-47 victory.

 

Hill led the way with 22 points and five boards, while also recording two blocks and two steals. Sophomore forward Rybecca Gonzalez (Pawtucket, RI) posted 16 points and added five rebounds. Freshman guard Abbey Burke (East Greenwich, RI) notched 11 points and chipped in with five boards in her first collegiate game. RIC shot 37.3 percent (25-for-67) from the field and 68.2 percent (15-for-22) from the free throw line in the victory.

 

The Rams were led by sophomore guard Tyra Harrison (Baldwin, NY), who scored 11 points and added six boards. Sophomore guard Marissa Monaco (Bohemia, NY) recorded a game-high eight rebounds in the loss. FSU were held to just 27.3 percent (15-for-55) from the floor and 29.2 percent (7-for-24) from long range in the game.
