CAPRARO PICKS UP TWO ASSISTS IN
SEASON-OPENING LOSS TO ELMS

Providence, R.I.-Junior forward Brie Voight (Springfield, MA) scored a hat-trick to give visiting Elms a 6-3 victory over Rhode Island College in the 2016 season-opener for both clubs in womenís soccer action played at Alumni Field on Thursday evening.

Rhode Island College (0-1) got on the board first when sophomore midfielder Elena Couto (Coventry, RI) started a breakaway and fed a pass to classmate forward Olivia Capraro (North Providence, RI). Capraro then sent a cross to sophomore forward Brittany DeGrooth (Westerly, RI) who slid a shot past the Elms (1-0) keeper and the near post  for the 1-0 lead at the 26:37 mark.

The Anchorwomen extended their lead in the 34th minute as Capraro once again started the play and fed senior midfielder Jaclyn Greenman (Waterford, CT) down the left side. Greenman then hit a cross into the box that deflected off charging senior midfielder Chelsea Combs (Ashford, CT) for the 2-0 advantage.

Elms responded, however, and cut the RIC lead down to 2-1 in the final minute of the first half when Voight scored her first goal of the game after a miscue right in front of the RIC net. The Anchorwomen held the one goal lead heading into halftime,  despite Elms holding the 15-4 advantage in shots for the stanza.

The Blazers quickly knotted the game at 2-2 at the 47:35 mark as Voight headed in a free kick from junior midfielder Mackenzie LaRochelle (Chicopee, Mass.) after an ill-advised RIC foul.

After RIC was whistled for a hand ball in the box in the 63rd minute, senior midfielder Rachel Mick (Granby, Mass.) converted the ensuing penalty kick to give Elms the 3-2 lead. The Anchorwomen then played the remaining 27 minutes down a man.

LaRochelle then tallied what would prove to be the game-winning goal with an unassisted marker in the 66th minute to give the Blazers the 4-2 advantage. Elms then took a 5-2 lead as senior back Meeghan OíConnor (Fall River, MA) scored with an assist from freshman midfielder Haley Richard (Monson, MA) in the 71st minute.  The two teams then traded goals down the stretch, which included Voightís third of the game, as the visitors cruised to the 6-3 victory.

Junior midfielder Stephanie Ricci (Smithfield, RI) scored on a free kick to round out the hostís scoring on the night.

Freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Molin (West Hartford, CT) recorded the win (1-0) in net for Elms with two saves, while freshman netminder Amber-Marie Francois (Warwick, RI) (0-1) made 11 stops in the setback for RIC. Junior goalkeeper Brianna Sousa (Warwick, RI) notched a pair of saves in relief for the Anchorwomen.

Elms dominated the game in shots, holding a 28-8 advantage.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Fisher on Saturday, Sept. 3 (1 p.m.).
