RIC OPENS SEASON WITH, 7-2, WIN OVER SALVE REGINA

Providence, R.I.-The Rhode Island College women’s tennis squad opened the 2016 campaign with an impressive, 7-2, victory over Salve Regina in a non-conference contest played at the RIC Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.

 

RIC (1-0) took the early 2-1 lead after doubles action with junior Dayna Reilly (Swansea, MA) and senior Julie Reddy (Smithfield, RI) posting an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Katherine Braganca (Pawtucket, RI) and junior Isabella Romeo (Greenville, RI) picked up an 8-1 win at No. 2 double.  Salve Regina’s (0-1) Anna Godshalk and Taylor Amendola teamed for an 8-6 win at third doubles for Salve Regina.

It was more of the same in singles action as Reilly posted a perfect (6-0, 6-0) win at No. 1 singles, while Reddy notched a straight set (6-1, 6-1) win at No. 2 singles. 

 

Junior Laura Nastasi (Smithville, NJ) came away with a hard fought (4-6, 6-0, 6-3) win at No. 3 singles, while Brananca notched her second win of the day by posting a (6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 10-3) win at No. 4 singles.  Senior Jorgie Martin (Greenville, RI) recorded a (6-4, 6-3) win at No. 5 singles to round out the RIC individual victories.

 

Salve’s Sarah Kraus picked up the lone singles victory for the Seahawks, posting a (6-2, 6-2) win at the No. 6 spot.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Suffolk on Tuesday, Sept. 6 (6 p.m.).
