ANCHORMEN BLANK NATIONALLY-RANKED MONTCLAIR STATE, 2-0

Bristol, R.I.-The Rhode Island College menís soccer team knocked off No. 14 Montclair State, 2-0 at the 2016 Squad Locker Invitational, hosted by Roger Williams on Sunday afternoon for the club's first win of the season.

 

After battling through the early part of the first half, RIC got on the board when sophomore forward Chris Chantre (Pawtucket, RI) took a shot from the right side of the goal that hit off the post and found the back of the net at the 29:55 mark to put the Anchormen up 1-0. RIC took the one goal lead into halftime, despite Montclair State holding the 11-5 advantage on shots.

 

The second half saw Montclair State hold an 8-2 advantage in shots, but it was RIC that tallied the lone goal. Senior midfielder Thomas Wampler (Attleboro, MA) finished off a penalty kick at the 73:55 mark to give the Anchormen an insurance marker en route to the 2-0 victory.

Senior goalkeeper Chris Moura (Rumford, RI) had six saves to earn the shutout victory for RIC, while Mike Saalfrank notched one stop in the loss for Montclair State.

 Moura and senior midfielder Dan Monteiro (Pawtucket, RI) were named to the Squad Locker Invitational All-Tournament Team.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host No. 1-ranked and defending National Champions Amherst at Alumni Field on Wednesday, Sept. 7 (7 p.m.).
