GRAMMAS SCORES FIRST CAREER GOAL AS ANCHORWOMEN FALL, 3-1, TO SALVE REGINA

Providence, R.I.-Sophomore midfielder Eleni Grammas (Cranston, RI) scored her first career goal as the Rhode College women’s soccer squad dropped a 3-1 contest at Salve Regina on Tuesday afternoon.

Salve Regina (1-2) took the early 1-0 lead when sophomore midfielder Delaney Maxwell (Lincoln, RI) notched an unassisted goal in the 12th minute. The host Seahawks extended the lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute after junior forward Lea Adams (Sandwich, MA) put in a pass from sophomore forward Abby McMackin (Walpole, MA).  Salve Regina took the two goal lead heading into halftime after outshooting RIC by a 14-7 margin.

Rhode Island College (1-2) trimmed away at the lead midway through the second half when Grammas’ unassisted tally at the 63:24 mark made the score 2-1. That would be as close as the Anchorwomen would get, however as Salve Regina held on for the 2-1 victory.

Salve Regina tacked on an important insurance goal in the 69th minute when junior defender Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, MA) scored off a feed from senior midfielder Erica Manchester (Wakefield, RI) to seal the win for the hosts.

Freshman goalkeeper Amber Marie Francois (Warwick, RI) made 14 saves in the loss (0-2) for Rhode Island College, while sophomore Carly Pala (Milford, CT) made 10 stops in the win for Salve Regina.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Bridgewater State on Wednesday, Sept. 14 (4 p.m.).
