ANCHORWOMEN FALL TO UNIVERSITY
OF SAINT JOSEPH IN HOME OPENER

Smithfield, R.I.--The Rhode Island College womenís swimming team dropped a 144.0-103.0 decision to the University of Saint Joseph (CT) in the Anchorwomen's home opener held at Bryant Universityís Chace Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon.

 

Senior Abbie Leazes (Providence, RI) recorded three first place finishes for RIC, finishing with the top time in the 1,000-yard free (12:26.30), the 100-yard fly (1:16.10) and the 500-yard free (6:03.04). The senior standout also anchored the 200-yard medley relay for the Anchorwomen, helping the team to a second place finish in a time of (2:11.05).

 

 

 

Junior Sydney Curran (North Kingstown, RI) notched a pair of first place finishes RIC, winning the 200-yard free (2:18.42) and the 50-yard fly (30.62).  She also had a second place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:37.69) and was a member of the teamís 200-yard medley relay team. 

 

Sophomore Courtney Payne (Waterford, CT) also tallied a pair of first place finishes for the Anchorwomen, taking first in the 50-yard breaststroke (38.80) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:25.96). Payne also had a third place finish in the 50-yard free (31.37).

 

Sophomore Madison Lane (Barrington, RI) recorded a pair of second place finishes for RIC, finishing second in the 50-yard free (30.38) and the 100-yard free (1:06.21), while also swimming both relay events for the Anchorwomen, taking a second place finish as a member of the 200-yard medley relay (2:11.05) and second in the 200-yard free relay (2:18.98).

 

Freshman Vanessa Dao (Revere, MA) recorded a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:25.26) and a third place finish in the 50-yard backstroke (40.99).  Dao had a fifth place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke (55.25) and also swam the opening leg of the 200-yard free relay (2:18.98) that notched a second place finish.

 

Freshman Jianna Hodge (North Providence, RI) registered a third place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (2:06.93) and a pair of fourth place finishes, taking fourth in the 50-yard backstroke (47.45) and the 100-yard free (1:36.86).  Hodge also swam a leg of the 200-yard free relay (2:18.98) that recorded a second place finish.

 

Freshman Chelsea Luciano (Pawtucket, RI) tallied a fifth place finish in the 100-yard free (1:44.84) and a sixth place finish in the 50 yard breaststroke (56.76) for the Anchorwomen.  She also swam a leg of the teamís 200-yard free relay (2:18.98) that had a second place finish.

 

 Rounding out the performers for RIC was freshman Karen Ramirez (Providence, RI) who recorded a fifth place finish in the 50-yard free (49.65).

 

Leading the way for the University of Saint Joseph was sophomore Veronika Latawiec (Newington, CT) as she notched a first place finish in the 50-yard backstroke (32.01), a first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.29) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:33.56).  Latawiec also swam the opening of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:10.47). Sophomore Gabriella Alberino (East Haven, CT) had a pair of first place finishes for the Blue Jays, winning the 50-yard free (28.30) and the 100-yard free (1:03.72). She also swam the anchor leg of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:10.47) team to help Saint Joseph to the meet victory. 

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will to the University of Saint Joseph Pentathlon on Friday, October 28 (5:00 p.m.)
