ANCHORWOMEN STAY UNBEATEN IN, 9-0,
SHUTOUT OVER SOUTHERN MAINE

Providence, R.I.-Senior Julie Reddy (Smithfield, RI) and junior Dayna Reilly (Swansea, MA) did not lose a game in singles action and paired for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles as Rhode Island College blanked Southern Maine, 9-0, in Little East Conference women’s tennis action played at the RIC Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.

 

Reddy and Reilly started doubles action off for the hosts (5-0, 2-0) by defeating USM (0-4, 0-2) freshman Mackenzie Colby (Southport, ME) and sophomore Courtney Jordan (Portland, ME) at No. 1 doubles.

RIC sophomore Katherine Braganca (Pawtucket, RI) and junior Isabella Romeo (Greenville, RI) bested the Huskies’ tandem of senior Liz Martin (Naugatuck, CT) and junior Lynn Swanson (Bath, ME), 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.

 

Junior Laura Nastasi (Smithville, NJ) and senior Jorgie Martin (Greenville, RI) defeated USM senior Rikki Demoranville (Madawaska, ME) and freshman Gabby Brooks (Palermo, ME), 8-1, at No. 3 doubles.

 

In singles, Reilly downed Colby (6-0, 6-0) at No. 1 singles, while Reddy defeated Martin (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2 singles.

 

Nastasi lost just one game (6-1, 6-0) in a sweep of Demoranville at No. 3 singles and Braganca bested Jordan (6-0, 6-0) at No. 4 singles.

 

Martin defeated sophomore Margaret Smith (Farmingdale, ME) (6-4, 6-3) at No. 5 singles and Romeo took out sophomore Joanna Scheidegger (Lyss, Switzerland) (6-3, 6-0) to round out the sweep.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Curry on Thursday, Sept. 22 (3 p.m.).
