GULLA & SWAP HELP ANCHORWOMEN SALVAGE SPLIT

Providence, R.I.-The Rhode Island College women’s volleyball team hosted Little East Conference rival Southern Maine and non-conference foe Becker in a tri-match played at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.

 

In the first match of the day, host Rhode Island College (3-5, 0-1 LEC) a dropped a 3-0 (19-25, 22-25, 25-27) decision against Southern Maine (7-3, 1-0 LEC). Southern Maine then finished their sweep for the day with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-19) win over Becker (7-3). Rhode Island College salvaged a split for the day with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-19) victory against the Hawks to cap off the day’s action.

In the opening match for Southern Maine, junior outside hitter Jess Williamson (Goffstown, NH) paced the Huskies with 13 kills and nine digs, while junior middle hitter Robbi Termentozzi (Littleton, CO) notched 10 kills. Sophomore setter Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, MN) added 18 assists, four kills and four digs. Junior outside hitter Courtney Lambrese (Cranston, RI) led RIC with 11 kills and seven digs, while junior setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) had 24 set assists for the Anchorwomen.

 

The second match saw Southern Maine (7-3) secure an impressive 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-19) victory against Becker. Williamson once again led the way for USM with 12 kills and three digs, while senior setter Megan Nilson (Granby, CT) contributed 16 assists, seven digs and four kills. Becker was paced by freshman Sofia Cullina (Deep River, CT) with five kills and two digs, while freshman setter Morgan Gould (North Attleboro, MA) had eight assists and two digs in the loss.

In the final match of the day, RIC salvaged a split with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-19) win over Becker. Junior outside hitter Mariclaire Gulla (Wakefield, RI) and freshman right side hitter Sadie Swap (Ivoryton, CT) each had eight kills in the win for the Anchorwomen. White notched 12 assists, four service aces and three digs. Senior Marissa Turner (Coventry, RI) notched four kills and contributed a block for Becker, while sophomore Brittney Bullis (Stafford, VA) tallied 11 digs and three service aces.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Wheaton on Thursday, Sept. 22 (7 p.m.).
