WARRIORS COME BACK TO EDGE RIC, 3-2

Providence, R.I.--Senior outside hitter Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury, CT) hit .275 (25-11-51) with 25 kills as the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors battled back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Rhode Island College, 3-2, in Little East Conference womenís volleyball action played at The Murray Center on Tuesday evening.

 

Rhode Island College (7-8, 0-3 LEC) won the first set, 25-21. The Warriors (12-6, 1-2 LEC) opened the frame with a 7-2 run while junior middle blocker Caryn Sibiskie (Rockfall, CT) was serving. The Anchorwomen chipped away to pull even, 18-18. The hosted capitalized on three consecutive attack errors by ECSU to build a 23-20 advantage and sealed the frame on another Warrior attack miscue. RIC junior outside hitter Courtney Lambrese (Cranston, RI) led the way with five kills.

 

The visitors battled back to win the second set, 25-20. Senior outside hitter Ashley Adams (Mystic, CT) notched a kill to even the frame, 14-14, and the visitors proceeded to go on an 11-6 run, capped by the winning kill by Mihalek. ECSU hit .270 (14-4-37) in the frame.

The hosts pulled ahead, 2-1, with a 25-19 win in the third frame. The stanza was tied at 13-13, but RIC used a 7-3 run to gain momentum and seal the set on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Jillian Ward (Coventry, RI).

 

The Warriors forced a fifth and deciding set by winning, 25-20, in the fourth frame. Back-to-back kills by senior outside hitter Ashley Adams (Mystic, CT) helped Eastern go up by six, 16-10. A Lambrese ace pulled the hosts within a pair, 21-19, but Mihalek picked up three of the final four kills to secure the win.

 

Eastern opened up a 5-1 lead in the final set, but a Lambrese kill pulled the Anchorwomen even, 12-12. However, Mihalek put down two winners and a RIC attack error sealed the hostís fate.

 

Adams and junior outside hitter Carly Balskus (Hebron, CT) each registered 10 kills. Junior libero Michelle Valliere (Lebanon, CT) recorded a match-high 24 digs. Sophomore setter Leah Sopeski (Deep River, CT) handed out 28 assists to go along with 11 digs.

 

Lambrese and Ward led RIC offensively with 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Ward registered a team-high 19 digs. Junior setter Abigayl White (Coventry, RI) posted a match-high 29 assists to go along with 11 digs.

 

In upcoming action, the Anchorwomen will continue Little East action at Western Connecticut on Tuesday, Oct. 11 (7 p.m.).
