RIC SCORES SEASON-HIGH SIX GOALS
IN WIN OVER BECKER

Providence, R.I.--The Rhode Island College women’s soccer squad knocked off Becker, 6-2, in a non-conference contest on the road on Wednesday evening.

Rhode Island College (4-4-2) took the lead just 6:28 into the contest when sophomore midfielder Eleni Grammas (Cranston, RI) split the defense and went on a breakaway.  Grammas then put in her team best fifth goal of the year to make the score 1-0.

The Anchorwomen capitalized on a Becker (7-5) own goal at the 13:26 mark for the two goal advantage and extended the lead to 3-0 in the 20th minute on an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Brittany DeGrooth (Westerly, RI).  Becker cut into the lead just over two minutes later after sophomore midfielder Helena Ortiz (Memphis, TN) put in a pass from sophomore midfielder Ciara McKissick (Charlton, MA) to make the score 3-1.

The visiting Anchorwomen capped off the scoring for the first half at the 28:15 mark when sophomore forward Olivia Capraro (North Providence, RI) notched an unassisted goal after a breakaway to put RIC ahead 4-1 heading into halftime.  The Anchorwomen controlled the action in the first stanza, outshooting Becker by a 10-4 margin.

RIC continued the offensive outpouring in the second half as DeGrooth tallied her second goal of the game in the 53rd minute, taking control of a loose ball in front of the Becker net before putting in a shot into the upper right hand corner to make the score 5-1.

Capraro tallied her second goal of the contest in the 58th minute to put the Anchorwomen up 6-1. After RIC was whistled for a foul in the box in the 64th minute, Ortiz tallied her second goal of the contest when she converted the penalty kick to cut the deficit down to 6-2.  That would be all the scoring for the contest, however, as RIC cruised to the 6-2 victory after outshooting Becker by a 21-9 margin.

RIC freshman goalkeeper Amber-Marie Francois (Warwick, RI) had two stops and allowed one goal, while junior Brianna Sousa (Warwick, RI) notched three saves for RIC in the win. Becker sophomore Jordyn Martel (Chicopee, MA) recorded nine saves in the loss for the Hawks.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East action at Western Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 8 (Noon).
