ANCHORMEN EDGE WILDCATS, 1-0

Providence, R.I.--The Rhode Island College menís soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over intra-city rival Johnson & Wales in a non-conference contest played at Alumni Field on Tuesday afternoon. The win extended the Anchormenís unbeaten streak to nine games, which dates back to a 3-0 win against Roger Williams on Sept. 28.

Senior goalkeeper Alexander LaBreche (Lincoln, RI), senior defenseman Yemi Matthew (Providence, RI), senior midfielder Dan Monteiro (Pawtucket, RI), senior goalkeeper Christopher Moura (Rumford, RI), senior defenseman Evan Rosa (Rehoboth, MA), senior defensemen Ryan Scarfo (Thomaston, CT) and senior midfielder Thomas Wampler (Attleboro, MA) were honored in a ceremony prior to the game as part of Senior Day.

Rhode Island College got on the board first when junior Komla Dogbey (Providence, RI) started a play near the top of the box and sent a pass to Matthew on the end line.  Matthew then sent a perfect crossing pass to the six yard box where junior forward Cooper Ferreira (Westerly, RI) went to a slide and chipped in a shot from five yards out to put the Anchormen up, 1-0, just 8:03 into the contest.  RIC took the one goal lead heading into halftime.

Ferreiraís goal would prove to be the lone marker of the game as both teams had scoring chances, but neither could convert as RIC held on for the shutout victory. Johnson & Wales held the advantage in both shots, 16-12, and corner kicks, 5-4, for the contest.

Moura made eight saves in goal in the victory for RIC, while senior Jon Robbins (Berkley Heights, NJ) tallied three stops in the loss for the Wildcats.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will close out the regular season with a pivotal Little East Conference matchup vs. Eastern Connecticut at home on Saturday, Oct. 29 (1 p.m.).
