FRIARS DOWN ANCHORWOMEN, 69-24, IN
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EXHIBITION ACTION

Providence, R.I.--The Rhode Island College women’s basketball team fell to Providence College, 64-29 in an exhibition game played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 5.

 

 Rhode Island College was led by senior guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) with 12 points and five rebounds, while freshman guard Jordyn Gauvin (Fall River, MA) added seven points and seven boards for the Anchorwomen.

 

Sophomore guard Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, MA) paced Providence with a game-high 14 points and added four rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and one steal. Senior guard Sarah Beal (Matthews, NC) tallied 12 points and four rebounds, while sophomore guard Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds while also contributing six assists in the victory for the Friars.

Providence held a 23-7 lead at halftime, after holding RIC scoreless during the second quarter. Beal led the Friars in the opening 20 minutes of play with 10 points. She hit 5-of-8 attempts from the field in 16 minutes of action. RIC got three first-half points from Gauvin, while freshman guard Kyla DePina (Cranston, RI) hauled in a team-best four rebounds for the Anchorwomen.

 

In the second half, Providence jumped out to a 25-point lead with a 16-7 scoring advantage in the opening 5:59 of the third quarter.  The Friars maintained control of the game the rest of the way.  Providence led by as many as 37 points (63-26) with 2:21 remaining in the fourth quarter.  The Friars held a 53-34 advantage in rebounding and outscored the Anchorwomen, 15-0, in second-chance points.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will open the 2016-17 season on Tuesday, Nov. 15 (5:30 p.m.) when it hosts Salem State in a non-conference contest at The Murray Center.
