2016 Rhode Island College Men’s Cross Country
Season Summary

Providence, R.I.-Head Coach Connor McCloskey’s men’s cross country team concluded the 2016 campaign by competing at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Nov. 12. The Anchormen did not score as a team.

 

The Anchormen competed at the 2016 Little East Championships on Oct. 29, but did not score as a team.

 

 

 

Junior Jonathan Carney (Bristol, RI) was named the team’s MVP. Despite having one year of eligibility remaining, Carney is graduating and concluded his RIC career. He finished 226th (28:36.05) at the N.E. Div. III Championship on Nov. 12. Carney finished 26th (27:40.69; season-best) at the Little East Championship on Oct. 29. He finished 28th (28:24.00) at the Western New England Invitational on Oct. 15. Carney finished 130th (28:13.99) at the James Earley Invitational on Oct. 8. Carney registered an 18th place finish (28:57.00) at the Pop Crowell Invitational on Sept. 24. He opened the season with a 136th place (28:42.43) finish at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 17.

 

As a sophomore in 2015, Carney finished 287th (29:25.60) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Nov. 14. He finished 46th (30:04.96) at the Little East Championships on Oct. 31. Carney finished 18th (28:27; season-best) at the Western New England Invitational on Oct. 17. He finished 130th (28:58.84) at the James Earley Invitational on Oct. 10. Carney finished 20th (28:36.00) at the Pop Crowell Invitational on Sept. 26. He finished 167th (28:50.32) at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 19.

 

As a freshman in 2014, he led the Anchormen at four events on the season. He paced the Anchormen by finishing 197th (28:55.20) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Nov. 15. Carney finished 17th (28:21.59) to lead the Anchormen at the Golden Bear Invitational on Oct. 18. He finished 79th (28:08.82) to pace the Anchormen at the James Earley Invitational on Oct. 11. Carney placed 21st (30:26.00) at the Pop Crowell Invitational on Sept. 27. He finished 142nd (28:21.76) to pace the team at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational to open the season. Carney was named the Little East Men’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week twice on the season.

 

Carney is a computer science major with a minor in mathematics and a 2014 graduate from North Kingstown High School.

 

Sophomore Jeff Garson (Cumberland, RI) placed 346th (31:41.93) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Nov. 12. He finished in 49th place (30:25.46; season-best) at the Little East Championship on Oct. 29. Garson placed 104th (31:06.00) in the Western New England Invitational on Oct. 15. He finished in 290th place (30:34.45) at the James Earley Invitational on Oct. 8. He placed 47th (31:07.00) at the Pop Crowell Invitational on Sept. 24. He opened the season with a 203rd-place finish (32:15.16) at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 17.

 

Freshman Helder Gomes (Pawtucket, RI) registered a 304th place finish at the N.E. Div. III Championships (30:05.60) on Nov. 12. Gomes finished 33rd at the Little East Championship (28:30.37; season-best) on Oct. 29. He placed 54th (29:05.00) at the Western New England Invitational on Oct. 15. Gomes finished 289th (30:33.97) at the James Earley Invitational on Oct. 8. He ran his first race of the season and placed 24th (29:22.00) at the Pop Crowell Invitational on Sept. 24.

 

Freshman Carlton Eaton (Smithfield, RI) finished 357th place (33:01.68) at the N.E. Div. III Championships on Nov. 12. He placed 57th (32:42.35; season-best) at the Little East Championship on Oct. 29. He opened the season with a 383rd place (34:23:49) finish at the James Earley Invitational on Oct. 8.

 

Freshman Jephte Wagnac (Providence, RI) placed 33rd (28:30.37) at the Little East Championship on Oct. 29.
