New London, Conn.-The Rhode Island College women’s lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season with a commanding, 19-5, victory at Mitchell on Wednesday afternoon.


RIC (1-4) dominated play early on, jumping out to a 4-0 lead, paced by three goals  from sophomore attacker Tess Bradley (Tiverton, RI). Mitchell (0-1) got on the board when Ashley Murtha scored for the Mariners with 24:21 left in the first half to make the score 4-1.


The Anchorwomen responded quickly when senior midfielder Betsy Heidel (Warwick, RI) scored on a free position shot for the 5-1 advantage. Another free position goal for RIC, this time from sophomore defender Katherine Gould (Harrisville, RI), provided the team with what would prove to be the game-winning goal with 19:20 left in the first half.

The Anchorwomen continued to control the action throughout the remainder of the stanza, taking a 12-4 lead into halftime after outshooting Mitchell by a 19-9 margin. Bradley had four first half goals for RIC, while Heidel notched three in the stanza for the Anchorwomen.


It was more of the same in the second half as RIC opened the frame with a 7-0 run to extend the advantage to 19-4. The Anchorwomen then cruised to the 19-5 victory. Bradley finished with six goals and two assists, while Heidel added four goals and three assists. Junior attacker Allison Smedberg (Cranston, RI) also notched a hat trick. Murtha notched four of Mitchell’s five goals. RIC recorded a 32-15 advantage in shots and 24-14 advantage in ground balls in the contest.


Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Eaton (Cumberland, RI) made 12 saves in the win for RIC, while for Gillian MacLellan made eight stops in the setback for the hosts.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Becker on Saturday, March 25 (1 p.m.).
