Newport, R.I.--The Rhode Island College menís tennis squad suffered a hard-fought, 5-4, setback against intra-state rival Salve Regina at the Leroy Avenue Courts on Thursday afternoon.


RIC (0-4) took the 2-1 lead after taking two of the three doubles matches. RIC freshman William Tavares (Kingston, RI) and junior Lee Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) posted a 9-7 win over Salve Regina (2-3) sophomore D.J. Bisaillon (Watertown, CT) and junior Kevin Brocks (Albany, NY) at the No. 1 spot.

The Anchormen took another point with a commanding, 8-0, win by sophomores Matthew Gambardella (West Warwick, RI) and Alan Esposito (Clinton, CT) over SRU sophomore Zach Monahan (Stoughton, MA) and freshman Dante Petrosino (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ) at the third doubles spot.


The Seahawks No. 2 team of junior Will Masse (Wyoming, RI) and freshman Aaron White (Falmouth, MA) notched a 9-7 win over the Anchormenís team of senior Cory Duquette (Warwick, RI) and sophomore Chandler Scott (Ashaway, RI) to send the match into singles play with RIC holding the 2-1 advantage.


In singles action, Gambardella posted a (6-0, 6-0) win against Monahan at the No. 5 spot for his second win of the day. Esposito took a (6-2, 6-2) win at No. 6 singles for his second victory on the afternoon to give the Anchormen four points for the match. That would be all the scoring for RIC as Masse took a (6-0, 6-0) win against Tavares at No. 1 singles for the Seahawks. Brocks took No. 2 singles with a (6-0, 6-4) win over Scott, with Bisaillon notching a (6-1, 6-0) victory over Tiberi to secure the victory.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open Little East Conference play at home against Bridgewater State on Monday, April 3 (3:30 p.m.).
