Cambridge, Mass.-The Rhode Island College men's tennis team posted a commanding, 9-0, shutout win at Lesley in a non-conference contest on Monday evening.




RIC (2-5) jumped out to a 3-0 advantage with a complete sweep of the doubles action. Freshman William Tavares (Kingston, RI) teamed with junior Lee Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) to defeat Lesley (3-6) freshmen Beowulf Urban (Blue Hills, ME) and Patrick Corcoran (West Hartford, CT) in first doubles by a score of 8-2.


Sophomore Chandler Scott (Ashaway, RI) and senior captain Cory Duquette (Warwick, RI) took an 8-2 win second doubles. Sophomores Matthew Gambardella (West Warwick, RI) and Alan Esposito (Clinton, CT) rounded out doubles play with an 8-0 win at No. 3.


Tavares posted a (6-2, 6-2) win over Urban at No. 1 singles to record his second victory of the day. Scott notched a (6-1, 6-0) win at No. 2 over freshman Evan Flaherty (Scituate, MA) with Tiberi posting a (6-0, 6-1) win against Corcoran at the third singles spot.


At No. 5 singles, Duquette notched a (7-5, 6-0) win over freshman Evan Zona (Hingham, MA). Gambardella and Esposito recorded perfect (6-0, 6-0) wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively, to give the Anchormen the 9-0 victory.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host MCLA in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 11 (3:30 p.m.).
