COLONIALS TAKE TWO FROM ANCHORWOMEN

Providence, R.I.--Junior first baseman Kayla Nowak (North Branford, CT) went 5-for-7 with four runs scored, six RBI and a pair of three-run homers as Western Connecticut swept a doubleheader from Rhode Island College in Little East Conference softball action on Tuesday night at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

 

The Colonials (13-13, 5-1 LEC) won game one, 5-3, and took game two, 10-7, from the Anchorwomen (6-14, 1-5 LEC). Nowak hit for the cycle in the second contest, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBI, a single, double, triple and a homer.

 

In the opener, Rhode Island College jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first when senior designated player Mary Sweeney (Portsmouth, RI) got the rally started with an RBI bases loaded bunt single. Junior first baseman Chelsea Schott (Meriden, CT) followed later in the frame with a two-run single.

 

The Colonials struck back in the third when Nowak ripped a one-out three-run homer to even the contest.

The game remained tied, 3-3, until the top of the sixth when junior second baseman Tori Dugan (Norwalk, CT) raced home from third on an Anchorwomen error after a pop out in the infield. Freshman catcher Kam Geysen (East Hampton, CT) doubled and later scored an insurance run off a RIC throwing error in the seventh.

 

Freshman pitcher Sam Tenke (Glen Cove, NY) picked up the win (5-3), allowing three runs on five hits to go along with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. Sophomore Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) hurled 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. RIC sophomore reliever Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) suffered the loss (1-6), allowing two unearned runs on three hits in 4.0 innings of work. Geysen went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored to lead the visitors in the contest.

 

In the nightcap, Western jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first two innings, before erupting for six runs in the top of the third. Nowak crushed her second three-run bomb of the day and freshman center fielder Natalia Hart (Milford, CT) contributed a sacrifice fly in the inning.

 

WCSU added a run in the fourth to build a 9-1 advantage, but RIC plated four runs in the home half of the frame to pull within four, 9-5. Sophomore catcher Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, RI) smacked a three-run double and later scored on an illegal pitch. Dugan gave the visitors a five-run lead, 10-5, with an RBI fielder’s choice in the sixth.

 

The hosts rallied to pull within three, 10-7, in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out. Senior center fielder Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI) brought in one with a sacrifice fly, while sophomore shortstop Kelsey Burgess (North Providence, RI) came home on an error on the same play.

 

RIC sophomore Erica Fleming (Sagamore Beach, MA) took the loss (2-4). Smith picked up the win (5-6), allowing two runs (one unearned) on three hits in 1.2 innings of work. Freshman reliever Angelina Miller (Holbrook, NY) picked up the save (1), hurling 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Junior second baseman Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Anchorwomen.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at home against UMass Boston on Saturday, April 22 (1 p.m.).
