BEACONS SPOIL SENIOR DAY

Providence, R.I.-- Senior right fielder Gia Raczkowski (Stoneham, MA) went 5-for-7 with a run scored, five RBI and a double as UMass Boston swept a doubleheader from Rhode Island College in Little East Conference action played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Saturday.

It was Senior Day for the Anchorwomen (6-16, 1-7 LEC) as center fielder Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI), left fielder Sarah Molin (Seymour, CT), right fielder Michaela Paddock (Danbury, CT) and third baseman Mary Sweeney (Portsmouth, RI) were recognized along with their families, in between games.

Game one was a scoreless affair until the top of the third when the Beacons (21-8, 6-4 LEC) struck for three runs. Sophomore catcher Roxanne Vento (Arlington, MA) got the rally started with an RBI double. Raczkowski brought in one with an RBI single and freshman designated player Ari Bilotta (Leominster, MA) rounded out the frame’s offensive output with a sacrifice fly.

The hosts loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with no outs, capitalizing on a pair of Beacon miscues. UMB freshman pitcher Jess Greenspan (Rocky, Hill, CT) got an infield pop out, but then issued a walk to junior second baseman Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) to bring in a run. Duvall followed with an RBI groundout to pull RIC within a run before UMB ended the threat.

The Beacons put runners on the corners with two away in the top of the seventh and Bilotta came through with an RBI single for what proved to be the game-winning run. In the bottom of the frame, RIC pulled within a run, 4-3, on sophomore catcher Emma Simmons’ (Saunderstown, RI) RBI single and loaded the bases with two down, but Greenspan got a huge strikeout to secure the win.

RIC sophomore starter Amanda Troiano (Seekonk, MA) took the loss (2-2), allowing three runs on seven hits. Greenspan went the distance to pick up the victory (15-6), allowing three unearned runs on three hits to go along with eight strikeouts. UMB freshman left fielder Kiera Prusmack (Houston, TX) went 3-for-4 in the win.

In the nightcap, the Beacons struck for two runs in the top of the first as sophomore center fielder Taylor Pawlina (Woonsocket, RI) smacked a two-out, two-run double.

The visitors increased their lead with an additional two runs in the third as Raczkowski doubled in a run and Pawlina chipped in with a sacrifice fly.

Vento contributed an RBI single and Raczkowski singled in a run as UMB built a 6-0 lead with a two-run fourth. The Anchorwomen stormed back with a five-run fourth, kickstarted by a two-run single by Sweeney. Simmons and sophomore third baseman Cristin Chiaverini (Pawtucket, RI) each had RBI in the frame as the hosts pulled within a run, 6-5.

The Beacons responded with a run in the sixth on a Pawlina sacrifice fly to make it a two-run advantage, 7-5. UMB put the game out of reach in the seventh on a Vento RBI single, a two-run single by Raczkowski and Bilotta run-scoring single.

Gough took the loss (1-7), allowing four runs (two unearned) on four hits in three innings of work. UMB freshman reliever Megan Hoben (Bedford, MA) picked up the win (4-2), hurling 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Raczkowski went 4-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI in the win. Vento went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI, while Pawlina knocked in four.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at Southern Maine on Sunday, April 23 (1 p.m.).
