Providence, R.I.--Senior midfielder Betsy Heidel (Warwick, RI) scored a hat trick in her final collegiate game in a Rhode Island College women’s lacrosse uniform as RIC dropped a 16-7 decision against Elms at Alumni Field on Friday afternoon.


RIC (2-13) junior midfielder Jessica Trautman (Narragansett, RI) added a pair of goals to go along with two ground balls and four draw controls as the Anchorwomen closed out the 2017 season.


Elms (12-2) was paced by sophomore attacker Vanessa Vurno (Salem, CT) and freshman midfielder Haley Richard (Monson, MA) who each tallied five goals and two assists in the win for the Blazers. Elms held a 37-12 advantage in shots for the contest.

RIC jumped out to the early lead when Heidel connected on a free position shot just 1:18 into the contest. The Anchorwomen made it 2-0 on a free position goal from Trautman at the 2:15 mark. Elms responded and scored three of the next four goals to tie the game, 3-3, on a goal from Vurno at the 10:32 mark.


The Anchorwomen regained the 4-3 lead on a free position goal from freshman attacker Hannah Ambrosia (Warwick, RI) at the 11:48 mark. The visiting Blazers then tallied six straight, which included three from Vurno, to pull ahead by five, 9-4. Elms held the 11-5 lead heading into halftime.


Elms continued to control the action in the second half, outshooting RIC by a 15-5 margin to secure victory. Junior midfielder Jackie Soucia (Belchertown, MA) had two goals in the second stanza for the Blazers.


Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Eaton (Cumberland, RI) made 13 stops for RIC in net, while senior goalkeeper Meeghan O’Connor (Fall River, MA) posted five saves in the win for Elms.
