ESPOSITO CLINCHES MATCH AS ANCHORMEN ADVANCE IN LITTLE EAST TOURNAMENT

Providence, R.I.óRhode Island College sophomore Alan Esposito (Clinton, CT) won in straight sets at No. 5 singles to secure a, 5-3, over sixth-seeded Western Connecticut in first round action of the 2017 Little East Conference Menís Tennis Tournament.

 

The third-seeded Anchormenís (8-7) No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Matthew Gambardella (West Warwick, RI) and Esposito posted an 8-0 victory against freshman Jacques Fortier (Southbury, CT) and senior Matt OíKeefe (Cromwell, CT) to open the match

 

Western Connecticut (5-12) senior Jason Hipona (Orange, CT) and freshman Aaron Campos (Ridgefield, CT) combined to defeat RIC freshman William Tavares (Kingston, RI) and junior Lee Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) at the No. 1 spot, 8-0.

RIC senior Cory Duquette (Warwick, RI) and sophomore Chandler Scott (Ashaway, RI) posted an 8-0 win over juniors Jeff Hensley (Naugatuck, CT) and Adam Howard (Waterford, CT) at the No. 2 doubles spot to send the hosts into singles action up by a point, 2-1.

 

In singles action, Tiberi bested Howard (6-0, 6-2) at No. 3 singles to put RIC up, 3-1. Campos downed Tavares (6-0, 6-1) at No. 1 singles to make it a 3-2 match.

 

Gambardella defeated Fortier (6-3, 6-1) at No. 4 singles, but Hipona once again pulled the visitors within a point, 4-3, with a straight set (6-0, 6-1) win over Scott.

 

Esposito then clinched the win at No. 5 singles, besting Hensley (6-3, 6-3) to end the contest.

 

The Anchormen advance to the Little East Tournamentís Second Round and will travel to second-seeded UMass Dartmouth on Thursday, May 4.
