DESTINEE BARRETTE FINISHES 12TH IN THE HAMMER
AT NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Geneva, Ohio--Rhode Island College junior Destinee Barrette (Warwick, RI) notched a 12th place finish in the hammer (52.39m) at the 2017 NCAA Div. III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by the University of Mount Union at the Spire Institute on Saturday afternoon. The top nine advance to the finals in each event.

 

Barrette was making her third appearance at the National Championships and equaled her previous best finish. She placed 12th in the hammer (51.15m) as a sophomore in 2015 and finished 22nd in the hammer (45.86m) as a freshman in 2014.

 

 

 

During the outdoor season, Barrette captured the Little East Championship and earned N.E. Alliance honors when she set a new program record in the hammer (52.53; season-best) at the Alliance Championships, hosted by Westfield State on April 29. She earned All-New England accolades with a sixth place finish in the hammer (47.54m) at the N.E. Div. III Championships, hosted by Williams on May 5-6. She finished in 11th place in the hammer (50.81m) at the N.E. Open Championships, hosted by Williams on May 12-13. Barrette posted a fourth place finish in the hammer (50.13m) at the MIT Last Chance Meet on May 18.

 

In upcoming action at the National Championships, sophomore Melanie Brunelle (Warwick, RI) will compete in the triple jump on Saturday, May 27 (1:30 p.m.).
