BRUNELLE WINS THREE EVENTS AS ANCHORWOMEN FINISH SECOND AT COAST GUARD INVITATIONAL

New London, Conn.--The Rhode Island College women’s indoor track & field team notched a second place finish at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Winter Invitational on Saturday. The Anchorwomen finished the 18-event meet with 99.0 points, while Coast Guard took home the team title with 135 points. Eastern Connecticut rounded out the field in third place with 86 points on the day.

 

Sophomore Melanie Brunelle (Warwick, RI) swept the three jumping competitions, taking first in the high jump (1.52m), long jump (52.4m) and triple jump (10.91m). Brunelle also finished second in the 600m (1:47.59) and was third in the 200m (27.92).

RIC sophomore Eleni Grammas (Cranston, RI) took first place in the 55m (7.62) and was fourth in the 200m (28.16). Sophomore Nicole Grammas (Cranston, RI) recorded a first place finish in the 400m (1:02.74).

 

Freshman Chevell Burgess (Providence, RI) took second in both the high jump (1.47m) and the 55m hurdles (9.56).

 

Senior Jessica Trautman (Narragansett, RI) finished third in the weight throw (11.54m). Senior Christina Sayavong (Pawtucket, RI) posted a fifth place finish in the weight throw (10.83m).

 

Sophomore Margaret McCaffrey (East Greenwich, RI) finished second in the 1,000m and sixth place in the mile (6:05.12).

 

The Anchorwomen’s 4x200m relay team recorded a first place finish (1:49.76), while the 4x400m relay (4:29.59) and the 4x800m relay (12:00.81) each finished third.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to the Springfield Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21 (9 a.m.).
