LEAZES HONORED ON SENIOR DAY

North Smithfield, R.I.-The Rhode Island College womenís swimming team dropped a 121.0-64.0 decision against Western Connecticut at Bryant Universityís Chace Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The meet was the final home event for RIC senior Abbie Leazes (Providence, RI).

 

Leazes recorded a firstplace finish in the 500-yard freestyle (6:23.45). She also finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:36.49) and was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:32.83). Leazes swam the anchor leg of the RIC 200-yard freestyle relay team that took second place (2:00.92).

 

 

 

Junior Sydney Curran (North Kingstown, RI) notched a pair of first place finishes for the Anchorwomen, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.13) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:32.89). Curran also swam the last leg of the teamís 200-yard medley relay (2:21.16) that tallied a second place finish and swam the lead leg of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay (2:00.92).

 

RIC freshman Vanessa Dao (Revere, MA) took home first place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.56) and was fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:37.82).  Dao also swam the opening leg of the 200-yard medley relay (2:21.16) that notched a second place finish and the third leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay that took second place (2:00.92).

 

Sophomore Courtney Payne (Waterford, CT) tallied a third place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (31.94) and was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:27.55). Payne also swam the anchor leg of the second place 200-yard medley relay (2:21.16) and the lead leg of the second place 200-yard freestyle relay (2:00.92).

 

Freshman Jianna Hodge (North Providence, RI) had a pair of third place finishes 100-yard butterfly (1:55.40) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:41.21). She also swam the third leg of the second place 200-yard medley relay (2:21.16).

 

Freshman Karen Ramirez (Providence, RI) took home a pair of fifth place finishes for the Anchorwomen, taking fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (43.45) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:47.96).

 

Leading the way for Western Connecticut was sophomore Brianna Christiano (Prospect, CT) with a three first place finishes. She won the 200-yard freestyle (2:19.26) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:10.51) and swam the second leg of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:10.67). Freshman Olivia Wright (East Hartford, CT) also picked up three wins for the Colonials, taking first place in the 50-yard freestyle (28.52) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.77). Wright also swam the lead leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay (2:10.67)

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Westfield State on Saturday, Jan. 28 (1 p.m.).
