JAY JONES TIES RIC WRESTLING CAREER WIN TOTAL

Providence, R.I.- Rhode Island College Head Wrestling Coach Jay Jones tied the programís all-time wins record as he notched his 222nd career victory when he guided the Anchormen to a 2-2 record at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Championship on Sunday, Jan. 22.

 

Jones reached the milestone in the Anchormenís, 35-6, win over Plymouth State.

 

Now in his 18th season at the helm of the RIC wrestling program, Jones has posted a 222-161-1, tying the mark of 222-107-9 set by Rusty Carlsten. Carlsten was inducted into the RIC Hall of Fame in 1990 and served as the head coach from 1970-71 through 1991-92.

 

 

 

During his illustrious career Jones has six seasons of at least 15 wins. In the past 17 years, Jones has coached one National Champion, seven All-Americans, 11 NCAA All-Regional wrestlers, one NCAA Regional Champion, 64 All-New England wrestlers, eight New England Champions, 19 national qualifiers and 18 Academic All-Americans. He also led the Anchormen to two Pilgrim League Championships in 2002-03 and 2003-04.

 

Junior Michael Gallagher (Narragansett, RI) was named to the All-Tournament team at 184 lbs. after posting a perfect 4-0 record, which included a 6-4 win over Plymouth Stateís Chris Perreault, who is ranked No. 5 in New England. Senior John Georges (Cranston, RI) went 3-0 at 285 lbs., while junior Stephen Masi (Cumberland, RI) also recorded a 3-0 mark at 133 lbs. for the Anchormen.

 

The Anchormen are currently 5-7 and will return to action when they travel to Div. I Brown on Saturday, Jan. 28 (4 p.m.).
