Providence, R.I.-The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) named Rhode Island College junior 184 lbs. Michael Gallagher (Narragansett, RI) a Scholar All-American for his performance during the 2016-17 season.


Gallagher, a health sciences major, owns a 3.83 GPA, which ranked in the top 10 among NEWA competitors on the NWCA Scholar All-American team. To be eligible for the award, wrestlers must have a 3.2 GPA or better and be a major contributor on the team.




Gallagher was one of two RIC wrestlers to earn a bid to the 2017 NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships. He finished second in his weight class at the NCAA Northeast Regionals and also had a fifth place finish at the Doug Parker Invitational during the year. He wrapped up the season with a 25-10 record.


Head Coach Jay Jonesí team posted a 7-9 overall record in 2016-17 with a 6-5 mark against New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) opposition. The Anchormen finished 11th (16 teams) at the NEWA Dual Championship on Jan. 22. RIC posted a 12th place finish (19 teams) at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship on Feb. 25-26.d
