2016-17 Rhode Island College Women’s Swimming
Season Summary

Providence, R.I.-Interim Head Coach Barry Fontaine’s team wrapped up the 2016-17 season with a 20th place tie (21 teams) performance at the 2017 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships, hosted by the University of Rhode Island on Feb. 16-19. The Anchorwomen totaled a team score of 94.0. 

The Anchorwomen finished seventh (seven teams) with a team score of 58.0 at the Little East Conference Championship, hosted by UMass Dartmouth on Feb. 4.

Senior Abbie Leazes (Providence, RI) placed 10th in the 400-yard IM (5:02.60; season-best), 12th in the 1,650 freestyle (19:40.76; season-best) and 19th in the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle, while also finishing 21st in the preliminaries of the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:28.18), at the NEISDA Championships on Feb 19. She finished eighth in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:09.40; season-best) and 400-yard IM (5:16.93), while placing ninth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:45.68; season-best) and coming in fifth as part of the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:14.20), at the Little East Championship on Feb. 4. Leazes placed first in both the 400-yard IM (5:34.27) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:08.42), and earned third in the 50-yard freestyle (30.37), at Westfield State University on Jan. 28. She placed first competing in the 200-yard freestyle relay at Westfield State, as well. Leazes finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (6:23.45), second in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (12.36.49) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:00.92), and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:32.73), against Western Connecticut State on Jan. 21.

She earned first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12.29.81), 500-yard freestyle (6:01.93) and 200-yard IM (2:41.59), while also coming in second with the 200-yard medley relay (2:13.88), at Plymouth State on Dec. 3. Leazes finished first in both the 400-yard IM (5:24.04) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:59.74), while placing second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:58.75), vs. Western New England on Nov. 18. She placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (6:00.30), second in the 400-yard IM (5:24.60) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:19.70) at Eastern Connecticut on Nov. 12. Leazes placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (6:05.41), eighth in both the 1,650-yard freestyle (21:03.97) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:37.85), ninth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:19.92), 10th in the 200-yard freestyle (2:21.20), 20th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.10) and 22nd in the 50-yard freestyle (29.69; season-best) at the Louise Goodrum Invitational on Nov. 7. She also competed in the 200-yard medley relay (2:13.67) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.41), earning ninth and sixth place finishes, respectively. Leazes finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:26.30; season-best), the 100-yard butterfly (1:16:10; season-best) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:03.04), while also taking second with the 200-yard medley relay (2:11.05), against St. Joseph on Oct. 23. She placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:24.34) and third as part of the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:56.92) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:12.89) at the Michael Arsenault Memorial Relays on Oct. 15. 

As a junior in 2015-16, Leazes finished 15th in the 400-yard IM (5:14.20; season-best) and 17th in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:20.19; season-best), while also competing as a member of the 12th-place 800-yard freestyle relay (8:56.99), the 14th-place 400-yard freestyle relay (4:07.12) and the 15th-place 200-yard medley relay (2:06.28), at the NEISDA Championships on Feb. 12-14. She finished seventh in the 200-yard butterfly (2:50.32; season-best) and 10th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:49.04; season-best), while also competing as a member of the fifth place 400-yard freestyle (4:11.05) and 200-yard medley (2:07.16) relays, at the Little East Championship on Jan. 30. Leazes finished first in both the 400-yard IM (5:26.29) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:01.87), second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:02.02; season-best), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.83), at Western Connecticut on Jan. 24. 

She finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:16.75; season-best), the 100-yard butterfly (1:20.50) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:11.36), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:56.44), vs. Husson on Jan. 15. Leazes finished first in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:18.21; season-best) and the 200-yard IM (2:39.41) was third in the 200-yard breast (2:59.02; season-best), while also competing as a member of the second place 200-yard medley relay (2:10.92) vs. Plymouth State on Dec. 4. She finished first in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.31), the 400-yard IM (5:19.98) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:00.23) at Western New England on Nov. 20. Leazes finished first in both the 200-yard IM (2:37.68; season-best) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:09.9) and second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:41.89), while also competing as a member of the third place 400-yard medley relay team (4:52.35). at Eastern Connecticut on Nov. 14. 

She finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (6:05.41), eighth in both the 1,650-yard freestyle relay (21:03.97) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:37.85; season-best), ninth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:19.62; season-best), 10th in the 200-yard freestyle (2:21.20), 20th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.10), 22nd in the 50-yard freestyle (29.69; season-best), while also competing as a member of the ninth place 200-yard medley relay (2:13.67) and the sixth place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.41), at the Louise Goodrum Invitational on Nov. 7. Leazes finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:53.19), the 100-yard butterfly (1:19.92) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:13.63), while also competing as a member of the first place 200-yard medley relay (2:12.12), at the University of St. Joseph on Oct. 24. 

As a sophomore in 2012-13, Leazes picked up a trio of season-high times as she placed third in the 400 IM (4:51.48) to earn All-New England honors, finished 12th in the 500 freestyle (5:28.87), and also earned a 14th-place finish (2:25.95) in the 200 butterfly at the NEISDA Championships on Feb. 8-10. She placed first in the 100 IM with a season-high time of 1:11.20, placed third in the 200 butterfly (2:35.51) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.96) at Eastern Connecticut on Feb. 2. Leazes finished first in both the 400 IM (5:07.76) and the 1,000 freestyle (11:45.57), while also finishing third in the 100 backstroke with a season-best time of 1:11.36, at the Western Connecticut double duals on Jan. 27. She took first place in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 2:10.67, finished first in the 100 freestyle with a season-high time of 1:01.14, and finished first in the 500 freestyle (5:43.38) at Husson on Jan. 19.

Leazes placed first in both the 200 butterfly (2:32.90) and the 200 IM (2:27.28), and also placed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:50.50) at the Plymouth State double duals on Jan. 12. She earned All-Little East honors thanks to a second place finish in the 400 IM (4:56.39) at the Little East Championship on Dec. 1. Leazes also finished sixth in the 1,000 freestyle with a season-best time of 11:32.96 and 10th in the 200 breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:46.62 at the LEC Championships. She finished fifth in the 200 IM (2:30.31), sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:43.50) and seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:11.52) at the Louise Goodrum Invitational on Nov. 10. Leazes took first place in the 200 freestyle (2:10.68), second place in the 200 IM with a season-best time of 2:27.07, and fourth place in the 100 breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:20.24 at Western New England on Nov. 2. She placed first in both the 1,000 freestyle (11:54.54) and the 200 IM (2:29.96), and also finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:01.62) at the University of St. Joseph on Oct. 27. 

As a freshman in 2011-12, Leazes competed at Florida Southern University.

She is an advertising major with a minor in marketing and a 2011 graduate of La Salle Academy.

Junior Sydney Curran (North Kingston, RI) placed 11th in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.10; season-best), 14th in the 100-yard IM (1:07.66; season-best), 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.75), while also swimming the anchor leg of the 200-yard medley relay (4:28.18), which finished 21st in the preliminaries, at the NEISDA Championships on Feb. 19. She placed eighth in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.92) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:51.54), while competing in the 200-yard medley relay (2:15.03) and 400-yard freestyle relay (2:15.03), finishing seventh and fifth respectively, at the Little East Championships on Feb. 4.

Curran finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:21.55), second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:19.82) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (1:03.32; season-best) at Westfield State on Jan. 28. She also came in first as part of the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:59.39) vs. the Owls.  Curran placed first in both the 200-yard IM (2:32.89; season-best) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.13), as well as finishing second in both the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:00.92) and 200-yard medley relay (2:21.16), against Western Connecticut on Jan. 21. She finished first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:17.05), the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.21) and the 100-yard IM (1:13.55) at Husson on Jan. 14. Curran also finished second in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.16) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:35.49) at Husson.

She finished first in both the 100-yard butterfly (1:11.84; season-best) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.10), while also taking second with the 200-yard medley relay (2:13.88) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.55), at Plymouth State on Dec. 3. Curran finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:50.89; season-best) and the 200-yard IM (2:38.93), while also finishing second in both the 50-yard butterfly (31.40) and with the 200-yard medley relay (2:22.54), against Western New England on Nov. 18. She placed first in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.81), 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.74) and 100-yard IM (1:08.25), while finishing third with the 200-yard medley relay (2:31.91), at Eastern Connecticut on Nov. 12.

Curran placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.34), second in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.86), fifth in both the 50-yard butterfly (30.73) and the 100-yard IM (1:09.81) and ninth in the 50-yard freestyle (28.06) at the Louise Goodrum Invitational on Nov. 7. She also took ninth with the 200-yard medley relay (2:13.67) and sixth with the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.41) at the Louise Goodrum Invitational.

Curran placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.02; season-best), third in the 100-yard IM (1:10.08), 10th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.22), 12th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:16.92) and 13th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.35) at the University of St. Joseph Pentathlon on Oct. 28. She also finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:07.06) and fifth in the 200-yard medley relay (2:25.41) at the meet. Curran finished first in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:18.42; season-best) and the 50-yard butterfly (30.62; season-best), and second in the 200-yard IM (2:37.69) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:11.05) against St. Joseph on Oct. 23. She placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:24.34) and third with the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:56.92) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:12.89), at the Michael Arsenault Relays, hosted by Bridgewater State on Oct. 15.

Sophomore Madison Lane (Barrington, RI) finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle (6:15.54), 14th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:16.36), 15th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.99; season-best) and 27th in the 50-yard freestyle (29.88; season-best) at the Louise Goodrum Invitational on Nov. 7. She also placed ninth in the 200-yard medley relay (2:13.67) and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.41) at the same meet. 

Lane placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (30.38), the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.21), the 200-yard medley relay (2:11.05) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:18.98) against St. Joseph on Oct. 23. She finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:24.34) and third in both the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:56.92) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:12.89) at the Michael Arsenault Relays on Oct. 15. 

Sophomore Courtney Payne (Waterford, CT) competed in the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing 21st (4:28.18) in the preliminaries, at the NEISDA Championships on Feb. 19. She placed 13th in the 200-yard breaststroke (3:06.90) and 19th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:25.05; season-best), while also finishing fifth and seventh in the 200-yard medley relay (2:15.03) and 400-yard freestyle relay (4:14.20), respectively, at the Little East Championships on Feb. 4. Payne finished first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:59.39), second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:30.45) and fourth in both the 50-yard breaststroke (39.11) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:41.06), at Westfield State on Jan. 28.  

Payne finished third in the 50-yard freestyle (31.94; season-best) and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:27.55), while coming in second in both the 200-yard medley relay (2:21.16) and 200-yard freestyle relay (2:00.92), against Western Connecticut on Jan. 21. She finished third in both the 50-yard breaststroke (39.51) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:11.26) and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (7:02.38; season-best) at Plymouth State on Dec. 3. Payne also placed second with the 200-yard medley relay (2:13.88) while competing at Plymouth. She finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:34.60; season-best), the 100-yard freestyle (1:09.42), and in the 50-yard breaststroke (39.37), while also taking second with the 200-yard medley relay (2:22.54), against Western New England on Nov. 18.

Payne finished third in both the 100-yard freestyle (1:12.21) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:31.91) and fourth in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:34.68) and 50-yard freestyle (32.13) at Eastern Connecticut on Nov. 12. She placed 11th in the 50-yard breaststroke (38.33; season-best), 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:25.83) and 22nd in the 100-yard freestyle (1:06.55; season-best) at the Louise Goodrum Invitational on Nov. 7. Payne also finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:58.41) and ninth in the 200-yard medley relay (2:13.67) at the same meet.

 She finished 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:26.33), 21st in the 100-yard IM (1:22.65), 22nd in the 100-yard freestyle (1:11.61) and 27th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:25.64) at the University of St. Joseph Pentathlon on Oct. 28. Payne also placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:07.06) and fifth in 200-yard medley relay (2:25.41) at the same meet. She finished first in both the 50-yard breaststroke (38.80) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:25.96), second in the 200-yard medley relay (2:11.05) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (31.47) against St. Joseph on October 23. Payne placed third in both the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:56.92) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:12.89) at the Michael Arsenault Relays, hosted by Bridgewater State on Oct. 15.

Freshman Vanessa Dao (Revere, MA) placed seventh as part of the 200-yard medley relay (2:15.03) and fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:14.20), 13th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:13.10; season-best) and 17th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:05.15; season-best) at the Little East Championship on Feb. 4. Dao finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:15.60) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:59.39), third in the 1,650-yard freestyle (24:18.23) and fourth in the 200-yard medley relay (2:41.06) at Westfield State on Jan. 28.

She finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:14.56), as well as second in both the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:00.92) and 200-yard medley relay (2:21.16), and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:37.82) against Western Connecticut on Jan. 21. Dao placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (7:26.02), second in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.07) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:35.49) and fourth in the 100-yard IM (1:21.78) at Husson on Jan. 14.

She finished first in the 50-yard backstroke (34.16; season-best), second in the 200-yard medley relay (2:13.88) and third in both the 50-yard freestyle (29.82; season-best) and 100-yard backstroke (1:16.23) at Plymouth State on Dec. 3. Dao placed first in the 50-yard backstroke (35.01) and second in both the 50-yard freestyle (31.11) and 200-yard backstroke (2:54.00), as well as second with the 200-yard medley relay (2:22.54), against Western New England on Nov. 18. She placed second in the 50-yard backstroke (35.69) and third in the 50-yard freestyle (31.35), the 100-yard backstroke (1:18.90) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:31.91) at Eastern Connecticut University on Nov. 12.

Dao finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:07.06), fifth in the 200-yard medley relay (2:25.41), 21st in the 100-yard backstroke (1:21.97), 27th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:14.30), 29th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:49.69) and 30th in the 100-yard IM (1:30.51) at the University of St. Joseph Pentathlon on Oct. 28. Dao placed second in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:25.26) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:18.98) and fifth in the 50-yard breaststroke (55.25) against St. Joseph on Oct. 23. She finished third in the 100-yard freestyle relay (1:12.15) at the Michael Arsenault Relays on Oct. 15.

Freshman Jianna Hodge (North Providence, RI) finished 21st in the preliminaries as a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:28.18) at the NEISDA Championships on Feb. 19. She placed seventh in the 200-yard medley relay (2:15.03), 27th in the 50-yard freestyle (33.19; season-best) and 30th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:18.01; season-best) at the Little East Championship on Feb. 4. Hodge finished first in the 50-yard butterfly (42.84), second in the 100-yard butterfly (2:02.65) and fourth as part of the 200-yard medley relay (2:41.06) at Westfield State on Jan. 28.

She finished second with the 200-yard medley relay (2:21.16) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:55.40; season-best) against Western Connecticut on Jan. 21. Hodge placed second in both the 50-yard breaststroke (57.21) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:35.49) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (1:28.14) at Husson on Jan. 14. She earned first in the 50-yard butterfly (43.45), third in the 50-yard backstroke (45.43; season-best) and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (39.50; season-best) at Plymouth State on Dec. 3. Hodge finished second with the 200-yard medley relay (2:22.54), third in the 50-yard freestyle (41.05) and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:31.57) against Western New England on Nov. 18.

She placed third with the 200-yard medley relay (2:31.91), fifth in both the 50-yard backstroke (48.71) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:40.84) and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (42.05) at Eastern Connecticut on Nov. 12. She finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:07.06), fifth in the 200-yard medley relay (2:25.41), 36th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:48.22) and 40th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:34.86) at the University of St. Joseph Pentathlon on Oct. 28. Hodge finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:18.98), third in the 100-yard backstroke (2:06.93) and fourth in both the 50-yard backstroke (47.45) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:36.86) against St. Joseph on Oct. 23. She finished third in the 100-yard freestyle relay (1:12.15) at the Michael Arsenault Relays on Oct. 15.

Freshman Karen Ramirez (Providence, RI) finished 32nd in both the 50-yard freestyle (40.36; season-best) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:36.55; season-best) at the Little East Conference Championships on Feb. 4. She placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (11:42.37), fourth in both the 50-yard backstroke (58.25; season-best) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:41.06) and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (49.18) at Westfield State University on Jan. 28. Ramirez finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (43.45; season-best) against Western Connecticut State on Jan. 21.

Ramirez finished second in the 50-yard backstroke (1:01.19), 50-yard freestyle (48.75) and 200-yard medley relay (2:35.49) and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:47.46) at Husson on Jan. 14. She placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (49.65) against St. Joseph on Oct. 23.
